saturn Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 OK, I've seen these topics on the LP pages, but haven't seen one here yet. I will go with a little obscure song from Iommi off Heaven and Hell, called Lonely Is the World. IMO, that solo is so bleak, yet beautiful. I can close my eyes and imagine him playing on some desolate, barren landscape.
rjay777 Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Wow, I might have to go with Frank Marino's (Mahogany Rush) "Juggernaut". Total SG shredmania.
NeoConMan Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I can name about 20 AC/DC songs, especially from the early years. Brain-dead simple answer, I know..... I can't think of any other SG players that really grabbed me. Gary Rossington of Skynyrd deserves mention, but he was not exclusively an SG player - he played LP's too.
charlie brown Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 "Crossroads" from Live version of "Wheels Of Fire!" CB
Shaker Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 "Crossroads" from Live version of "Wheels Of Fire!" CB I thought that the Crossroads solo was done on an ES335?
dylumph Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I'll add Joey Mollands solo on Badfinger's Baby Blue. Also the whole Live At Leeds Who LP.
Randy1 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I'll go with Lynard Skynard's Free Bird with the SG and the glass slide.

charlie brown Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I thought that the Crossroads solo was done on an ES335? Well, it was...on the "Farewell Tour," at the Albert Hall. But according to most "experts" (whoever they are), the 335 was used primarily on that last tour. The "Fool" SG was used at the Winterland/Fillmore live dates, that was to become the Live version of "Crossroads!" I too, have heard various accounts, as to which guitar was used...the SG, 335, Firebird, LP "Black Beauty,"...all of them. But most seem to agree it was the SG. Whatever, it was done with, it's still one of my favorite solos. CB
Shaker Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Thanks for the information. I agree fully that that solo is great! I have it on my phone as a ringtone.
charlie brown Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Thanks for the information. I agree fully that that solo is great! I have it on my phone as a ringtone. You're quite welcome. I have played that song and a "similar" solo, on both my SG, and "Lucille," and through the Marshall, it sounds so close, with either guitar. I used to think it was the 335, as well, because there are passages that have that kind of "warm hollow" sound, but then I did it, with the SG, and could get that exact tone, too. So... Just that wonderful overdriven Marshall and "humbucker" pickup tone, really. And, of course, EC's considerable talent!!!! Cheers, CB
