What exactly are the differences in 57, 58, 59?

I know 59 got big frets.

57 was the first year of PAF's

The 58 is right there in the middle, what distinguishes it from the other two?

the main difference is cosmetics in the simplest terms

57 is a Goldtop with PAF they also have a 57 Custom thats not goldtop but the Standard is gold

58 Gibson moved away from Goldtop and had the plain top in translucent maple tops

59 the flames and bursts

Ever heard of google? smile.gif

Well the main difference is...

I have an R8, but not an R7 or R9. So IMO the R8 is the superior guitar =D>

That's why my list looks like it does...

56 would be a Goldtop with P-90's - Hell yeah!

57 would be a Goldtop with PAF's because THAT is where it all began.

57 Black Beauty with 3 PAF's and a Bigsby. Sweet.

There's no 58 in here for a reason....

59 is The Standard by which all others are judged.

60 is my personal favorite because of the slim neck. Les Paul perfection.

68 because they were probably the most ornate Customs

In the reissues, I thought there were subtle differences in neck profiles to sort of mimic the originals.

57 was fat, 58 was a little fatter maybe?

59 trimmed down slightly but got the jumbo frets?

60 kept the jumbo frets but got the slim profile?

Am I on the right track here?

I have no desire to own a 58 if cosmetics are the only differences.

you are on track Neoconman....well i got 2 59s and a 58 reissue. the 58 is heavier, obviously plaintop and has a fatter neck. that is what are the differences i can tell. I can't tell this jumbo fret thing. I think the 59s are lookers due to the flame, but you can get the same sound from a 58. my goal is to have a 56,57,58,59, and a 1960. I am always thinking about the tv yellow les paul special....

According to this : http://www.provide.net/~cfh/lpsun.html

An original 1958 LP is the same as a 1957 LP, they just stopped painting it gold and started finishing it Cherry Burst. In '59 they changed the neck and frets. In '60 they made the neck even thinner.

I don't really get worked up about the R9s simply because I already have an R8 that is a hell of a guitar and I'm not so fixated on flames that I would shell out the extra $$$$ for the sake of vanity, but if you think it's important then go for it, it's your money and I won't knock you for it, just don't expect me to buy into all the hype. I don't think Doc Watson cares what his guitar LOOKS like!

Some food for thought: Using MF pricing, (I'm sure you could get a better deal somewhere else) the R9s (and R0s) are $2200 more than an R8s, R7s and R0 Plaintops, which is almost the same price I paid for my R8! Thats a pretty big price jump for nearly identical guitars. And we're not talking a few hundred dollars here, but over 2200 of them dollars! And for what bigger frets, a slightly slimmer neck, a flame top and an authentic copy of "The Standard by which all others are judged"? Look I love my R8, but I am not fooled for one minute that it is a real '58.

You could get a pretty sweet half stack or combo with that cash you save and have something to actually play your new R8/R7 or R0 PT through.

one more time:

58s and 59s are the same except:

58s currently are plain tops, have a slightly larger neck and generally weigh a tad more than the 59s.

there is NO difference in frets on the Historics (vintage, yes).

NeoConMan, do yourself a favor and buy Beauty of the Burst. It's a great book and explains all the differences from year to year. If you love Les Pauls, you must own this book! It's full of pictures too of original bursts.

Another difference in the original bursts is that goldtops had 2, 3, or 4 piece tops. It was in 58, when Gibson started showing the tops did they go with 2 piece tops for aesthetics.

See, if I didn't read BOTB, I wouldn't have known that. =D>

Cooperoni, I look at it differently than you do.

Forget about the flame top, lighter wood and holy grail status. If you were buying a reissue LP and the best sounding guitar you came across was a R9, would you buy it then? I didn't want a R9 originally, I wanted a R8 because of the price difference...but when I heard this R9 it was pure magic. No other reissue that I've heard sounds as good as this R9 does. If I found a R7 or R8 that sounded the same, I would have gladly boughten it and saved myself a fair bit of money. It's not always about vanity.
