Gibson CS
Correct me if im wrong, but wasnt Muddy Waters weapon of choice a Fender Telecaster?
L5Larry
For us older folks I'd like to see Duane Allman on the list. He's definitely the LP slinger that first got my attention. After hearing him I had to have a tobacco sunburst Les Paul Standard, and in fact bought one in 1975. It was the first guitar I ever bought brand new. I got it from Mel Bay himself at his little store in Kirkwood, Missouri. I still have it, that's it pictured in my avatar.
Ignatius
Correct me if im wrong' date=' but wasnt Muddy Waters weapon of choice aFender Telecaster?[/quote'] I believe you are correct, deepblue1963, and further, Billy Gibbons' go-to guitar for decades has been the Telecaster's sister, the single pick-up Esquire. I just saw a video of him performing with one for Fender at NAMM. He may play a lot of other stuff on stage, but Billy even had Seymour Duncan develop the "Pearly Gates" pick-up especially to get a more meaty sound for his Esquire (if memory serves me correctly). And on top of that, Jimmy Page recorded much early Zeppelin on a Telecaster as well, and his famous double-neck was an SG variant wasn't it? FennRx
Led Zeppelin I and (most of ) II was done with a Tele given to him by Jeff Beck. Page used several guitars throughout Led Zeppelin, but obviously his main two were Les Pauls (and don't forget his Custom that was stolen). Slash may be a close 2nd, but say Les Paul and I instantly think Jimmy Page.

You're right: when I think Les Paul, I see Jimmy Page. I have to admit, though, that my second image is early '70s Pete Townshend. saturn
As far as iconic images, it would have to be Ace Freeley, Jimmy Page and Slash IMO. When I was a kid, I would just stare at my KISS Alive and Alive II albums and think Ace was the coolest with his makeup running from sweat, and his space costume and of course his cool LP slung on him. I later got into LZ and thought Page was the coolest, with his LP slung down to his knees. It took me awhile to come around to G&R, but now must admit that Slash's pure tone, raw riffs and that style he has of holding his LP out in front of him is timeless and classic. The irony to me is that the image works best in still photos, where that one instant in time is captured. Especially with Page. To see him in live video, he almost looks awkward and clumbsy, but pictures capture him perfectly. Again, just my opinion.

Gibson CS
the few live videos ive seen of muddy and billy they both played les pauls muddy with a goldtop and gobbons with a cherryburst after les pauls though, telecasters are the coolest guitar tough =D>
heritage cherry
I voted for Jimmy Page as being the most influential (on me) Les Paul player. Seeing Page with that 'burst standard in the movie release of The Song Remains The Same at the movies in 1977 really did it: "I've just got to get one of those things !" (even though I already had a strat). But it was many years later before I was able to afford a real Les Paul though. Muddy Waters is usually associated with a CAR tele, but he did play a Lester goldtop in the early days when they first came out (and a number of other guitars over the years). Page recorded Led Zeppelin 1 with a tele (great guitar sound), but Led Zeppelin II was recorded with a Les Paul. You can hear that it is, plus I've read many Page interviews to that effect. But I don't know if it was his Custom (before it was stolen) or one of his standards, or a mix of them.

BigSapelo
When I think about Les Pauls, I think about......... LES PAUL!!!!! And then I think about how, in the Les Paul: He Changed the Music video production, everybody is on stage with Les Paul..... Eddie Van Halen, B.B. King, David Gilmour, and several others... and they are all playing les pauls & taking turns doing solos, and Steve Miller steps up and trys to play behind his head and misses about three notes in front of everybody, God, and Les Paul, lol........... And then I think about Duane Allman...
Gibson CS
The solo on "Staiway to Heaven" was done with a Telecaster. Some people find that hard to swallow but its true. The only reason Page introduced the Gibson doubleneck into his arsenal was for playing Stairway live. I must say I always like Peter Framptons Les Paul playing. The black LP with the 3 pickups. Ill tell you this, that man can play guitar with the best of them!

Gibson CS
Alot of people only know "Frampton Comes Alive"...great album dont get me wrong. But he was known for his guitar playing long before that album came out. Humble Pie etc... I agree, he and the Nug should get more recognition. led floyd9
Jimmy Page is what I think about when someone talks about the Les Paul. It is true that he played the solo (and the whole song, I think) of Stairway to Heaven with a tele, and used the EDS-1275 for live performances. But let's face it, he probably only used the EDS-1275 to show off. But Heartbreaker was recorded with a LP :-k/ . And then after Jimmy Page there's Slash with his LP. That LP made one of my favorite solos. November Rain
Gibson CS
Back in the mid 80's I bought a replica doubleneck just like Pages. *Think Alex Lifeson of Rush*....It was white. If memory serves me it was made by "Starfield" That thing was soooo heavy...its really not a practical guitar....ladies loved it though! :D/
Gibson CS
i own a white double neck, i love it (but my back hates it) the upper fret access is pretty bad though, like ebouve the 15th fret on the bottom neck is unplayable humble pie is awesome, alex lifeson, i dont really care for him
flyingarmadillo
The solo on "Staiway to Heaven" was done with a Telecaster. Some people find that hard to swallow but its true. Yep, and the 12 string part of the studio album was done on a Strat XII. Still the iconic performance and the one everyone associates with the song was done on a Gibson.
