NeoConMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Does anybody else notice their computer slows to a virtual crawl on the Gibson forum? My computer zips from site to site in the blink of an eye until I log on here, been worse this week. The old Gibson forum was the same way, part of the reason I left.
ckledzepplin Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 my internet froze as i was reading this post
Thermionik Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Put Peer2Peer Guardian on your PC and check out the sites you are also hooked up to when browsing the Gibson forum - data mining, advertising and general internet usage tracking stuff galore. That gets worked over by your fire-wall and AV packages, and THAT in turn slows you right down - even crashes your system. Now HERE's a thing - when I posted on 'Fender Forum' asking what they did with the data gathered, I was removed pronto and have been blocked from posting ever since, no explanation even when I asked Chris Greene why I was blocked - I got no reply to my email. So if I disappear - you know what is going on.....
ksdaddy Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 My computer will 'hang' for a few seconds when I go onto this site but I attribute that mostly to the fact that this is an overworked Dell made in 2002 and I have dialup....26.6Kbps! There is no cable going by my house, I'm not in sight of the local towers for wireless, and I can't afford that Hughes setup. So why bother buying a new computer?
daveinspain Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I haven't noticed anything like that so far.... The new forum does seem to work better than the old one though...

My computer zips from site to site in the blink of an eye until I log on here' date=' been worse this week. The old Gibson forum was the same way, part of the reason I left. [/quote'] Hi, Neo! It's not just you! Compared to other sites like the Ibanez Forum, the Gibson Forum is dirt slow...it's so bad that I've resorted to turning off Internet Explorer's picture display so that I can at least read the posts in a timely fashion. Part of the problem is that I have a 56K dialup connection...I'm out in the sticks up here with no hope of a reasonably inexpensive broadband connection anytime soon. But even at the relatively slow dialup connection speed, other sites display with no overly long delays...unlike here, where it's like watching grass grow. <g> Cat Daddy
AXE® Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Nope not just you . The site was running like a pig all day yesterday . Today Not so bad ...
surfpup Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 It's fast for me. One day it was slow - but that's been one day in the three months or something since I've been here. The rest of the time... zippity!
Link Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Yah try eptying out your temp folder and roaming folder, along with the temporary internet files, that'll help with net performance a bit, if that doesn't work, try closing any programs that use the net or use a different browser :D That should do it
ChanMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Typically pretty speedy for me too. Could be network congestion between you and Gibson. Did you run a trace and check?
deepblue Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Its a free program so they arent going to maintain it or improve it unless they have to.
guitarstrummer Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 By any chance, are any of you who are having the problems on AOL? I was having the same problem on AOL, but when I switch over to IE 7.0, it's just fine. I tried to empty my temp folder, etc., but it made no difference.
DoubleSixx Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 No problems for me, but I don't use Internet Explorer. Give Firefox a try, it's faster and better security. Plus thousands of improvements. http://www.mozilla.com/
ChanMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Or try SeaMonkey I have had great success with them.
led floyd9 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Eh... my computer gets a LITTLE slower but that's it... it's kinda weird how fast my computer is, because it's a 2004 eMac, and it runs on Verizon DSL. And it's REALLY fast. Maybe it's because I only live like 30 miles from the Verizon DSL HQ (or whatever it's called) near us....?
NeoConMan Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Thanks guys! Yeah, I dump my files and folders often and it made no dfference. I was telling my wife what I would like to do about internet security. Ever see "Pulp Fiction" and the basement of that shop where the Gimp lived? I could set up something here at the NeoCon Compound to serve a similar purpose. If I EVER happened to meet personally some guy who does net hacking and hatches viruses for fun, I'd befriend him and invite him out on the town for drinks and such. With a little booze in him and his guard down - like internet users he victimizes - he'd disappear. I would give him the opportunity - as a guest - to change his way of thinking. When he "decided" to leave, he'd have nothing to show for it other than broken fingers. Every single one of them. Drop him off where I picked him up, and let him recover from his hangover however he wants. Let him explain why he can't wipe his own ***.... After he relates his story to a few of his hacker buddies.... These guys cost us billions of dollars a year, we all pay it because the cost of doing business is passed directly to the consumer even on the internet. My virus scan software is effective, but my email takes a million years to load, and it has a definitive effect on the net.
RichCI Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 No problems here either at home or at work. It might not be your computer but a problem with the connection between the host's servers and where you live or it could be that the site's servers are just crappy. I'm thinking probably the latter of the two as I've had problems with this site in the past and the servers appeared to be the problem.

Then the government would arrest them and make them work for $2 an hour in prison for 10 hours a day. They have to sit in front of a computer all day and try to find other hackers so the government can arrest them, too. I think that's more punishing than breaking their fingers.

My wife always tells me I have an Old Testament way of thinking, and G Randy activated it with his signature.
