Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Trivia question? Anybody know why that little piece under the binding is a different colour? I do.
led floyd9 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Isn't that because the little piece under the binding is still part of the maple top?
ChanMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Uhm... were you looking for a "The mahogany back is uniformly thick, and the top is arched..." kind of answer?
GavinGuitar Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 The binding is following the curve of the maple top . I may be mistaken, but do some models (I think maybe the Classic) have it get thicker and come down to the mahogany?
DoubleSixx Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hey you're lucky I've seen some Les Pauls that don't have the maple sprayed, I think it was on this forum several months ago. The maple doesn't show on solid color Les Pauls.
Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Smart group! Too bad there's no actual prize money. Actually, the only guy to get it right was RichCI. ;) The binding is following the curve of the maple top . I may be mistaken' date=' but do some models (I think maybe the Classic) have it get thicker and come down to the mahogany?[/quote']Yes & yes. The binding follows the curve of the maple top. Later models in the 60s had a thicker binding that reached the mahogany. Alright, time for the $800 question. Now, I'm sure there's more than one answer to this, but I'm looking for one specifically. How does the headstock of a 59 burst differ from current models?
jnstrom Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Besides being worth a ton of money! The G and the N are below the ibso
Thundergod Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 This has been discussed before... I dont remember if it was in this incarnation of the forum or the previous... but a guy insisted his POS Les Paul was real and we said it wasnt... he tried to prove his was real stating his didnt have that "binding error" as fakes did... I know... WTF!!! POS stands for Piece Of Sh¡t... before anyone says "did you mean VOS Les Paul?"
Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Thunder, if this has been discussed before, then you should know the answer. :D Besides being worth a ton of money! The G and the N are below the ibso I'm thinking structural.
ckledzepplin Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 the edges of the book ontop are sharper today than the old lp's
Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Good guess...it has to do with width.
GuitarJunkie Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Alright' date=' time for the $800 question. Now, I'm sure there's more than one answer to this, but I'm looking for one specifically. How does the headstock of a 59 burst differ from current models?[/quote'] No "wings". They started with a chunk of mahogany the full with of the headstock (well, actually a bit wider) so it was all one piece. Since that means a LOT of wasted wood, they now use a piece only as wide as the neck itself, and add wings to make it wider at the headstock.
Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 My bad...I meant thickness, not width. Junkie...by wings, you mean the lighter outer edges, obviously? That's not it. Several of the original bursts had wings.
Bluemoon Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 What the hell. Tim, you take on day off work because of a propane explosion at your work and you before an expert on LP construction.
Tim Plains Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 What the hell. Tim' date=' you take on day off work because of a propane explosion at your work and you before an expert on LP construction. [/quote']Cram it! I read a bit of Beauty of the Burst over the weekend (not today) and thought I'd try a some Q & A.
Riffster Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Isn't the headstocks of 50's Les Pauls smaller?...
littlekenny Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 What the hell. Tim' date=' you take on day off work because of a propane explosion at your work and you before an expert on LP construction. [/quote'] Dont worry about it, He just likes to think he's smart.
GuitarJunkie Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Junkie...by wings' date=' you mean the lighter outer edges, obviously? That's not it. Several of the original bursts had wings.[/quote'] Some, but not all. I was just looking for an excuse to post a Wayne's World EXTREME CLOSE-UP!!!!!! WHOA!!!! WHOA!!!!
Aaresz Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Tim! Did you go back to work and forget to give us the answer?
