marius Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 not sure if this is old news, but the lp standard has been discontinued
Plank_Spanker Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 HUH? The retooled 2008 Standards are making a splash all over......................................
littlekenny Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 HUH? The retooled 2008 Standards are making a splash all over...................................... I'm pretty sure he's talking about the "old" standard. But yeah they're making room for the 2008 standards
NeoConMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 the lp standard has been discontinued Marius, where did you get this information? Are you sure?
Zaphod B Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Well, the LP Standard as most people would define it is now called an LP Traditional. Except that the Traditional has 57 Classic pickups rather than Burstbuckers. So it's really not a Standard, Meanwhile, the Standard has all the wood hogged out of the body, but to make amends it now has a long-tenon neck joint and a neck profile designed by a drunken carpenter. And Burstbuckers.
Plank_Spanker Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 The operative point being that Gibson is still producing Les Paul Standards - retooled as they are.
NeoConMan Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 The operative point being that these guys read "Closeout" on the Musician's Friend website and immediately believe it's the end of the f-ing world. We went thru this when they were blowing out the last of their SG 61's. There's more to the guitar world than online warehouse retailers wanting desperately to sell sh!t to you. WAKE UP!!! Gibson is still producing Les Paul Standards - retooled as they are - and will be until the end of time. Believe it.
Zaphod B Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 WAKE UP!!! Hey! Keep it down, will ya? I'm trying to nap over here!
deepblue Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Im so glad I have one without the circuit board....The end of an era boys.
Silverbursted Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Nope, he's right it is discontinued, says so on the Gibson USA site. But the very next picture is the 08.
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Yep discontinued Like VW beetle, Coke, lets slap a new model out and say the old one discontinued add other sales gimmicks then we can sell the existing stock to people that panic because they don't like change and also sellnthe new ones to early adopters and will double sales for the same class of products. Just ranting sorry to see the Standard go I grew up playing these and a asymmetrical neck and a circuit board and chamber-red body aren't improvements to me. they should off left the Standard alone renamed the new Standard and confused us even more in the next couple decades.
surfpup Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Look at the Gibson site more carefully. The one marked "discontinued" has the 2007 specs. Next to it on the left is the "2008 Standard". I think they are just trying to help blow out the old ones.
Thundergod Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 openned the thread, read the post... and I think I just sharted...
ckledzepplin Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 openned the thread' date=' read the post... and I think I just sharted...[/quote']
jlwilliams1979 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 That closeout deal is what helped me get my new honeyburst. Thank you online retailers wanting to sell me stuff.
marius Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 Nope' date=' he's right it is discontinued, says so on the Gibson USA site. But the very next picture is the 08.[/quote'] yep thats what i meant. the 2002-2008 les paul std is discontinued
sloan999 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 so, if they are making a new 'standard' does that mean that the one i just bought is 'from the last year they made em that way'?.... does that give mine the start of its own cool story?
Rame Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Im so glad I have one without the circuit board....The end of an era boys. what the deuce are you talking about?? a circuit board? None of the new 08 LP standards have a circuit board in them.!?
Murph Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I'm kind of new here. But I'm a 50 year old guitarist that played in the Surfside Club in Clearwater Beach Florida in 1970 at the age of 12. I fronted a band in a biker bar in Apache Jct Az. at the age of 17, (The Ribeye) and made $25.00 a night, and drank beer with Banditos and Tiny Wells. Neo Con should know I'm big into killing deer here in Illinois, and just sold my .375 Holland and Holland Magnum, because we're forced to use slug guns up here. Fender and Gibson are fighting for market dominance as they always have. Hell, I've been playing a Tele for the last few years, after using a Les Paul recording, and an S.G. for most of my life, just because I like to switch up from time to time, and have been padding the bank account with some Country music money. Anyhow, Fender has changed the Tele with new saddles, and done other stupid crap in the past like Delta tone, noiseless, ect. Gibson is reaching new people with the new chambered Les Paul. New pots, ect., is just marketing. Just like the freakin' robot. To me, the free market will sort out the crap, and we'll see what is offered 10 years from now. I hate to see the "Standard" watered down, but I'm not a share holder. They will sell a bunch of them. I'm so close to buying a 58 Tobacco VOS, it's killing me. But it very well may be my last "good" guitar purchase. Because if I gig it for 20 years, I'll be 70. But hey......... At that point, I might very well WANT a chambered Les Paul................ Best of luck. Murph.
tonebias Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 what the deuce are you talking about?? a circuit board? None of the new 08 LP standards have a circuit board in them.!? Yep, they do... you can see the piece of crap right through the acrylic cover on the back. Can you imagine that Gibson is actually proud of a circuit board enough that they would make it visable! Did Gibson get new management? Is someone over there smokin crack? I was at my favorite GC today and tried the thing out and it feels like a very cheap guitar. The neck is totally stupid, I could'nt deal with it, I like semitry. The whole thing is light as a feather, Theres also all sorts of weirdness with the volume and tone controls... I will never own one. I think they really had their heads up their asses when they decided to call it "The Standard". My God! I hope people don't start thinking that "the standard" is actually the standard. Wouldn't that give the Les Paul a bad name? Wouldn't that cause people to assume that the new Les Paul is what they're all based on? What if Gibson tries to do this with all Les Pauls?
NeoConMan Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Hey Murph, .375 Holland and Holland Magnum is a nice deer round. By Golly, THAT will put 'em down! You're forced to use slug guns up there and nobody yells loud enough for Obama, Durbin or Daly to hear them.... I have the stupid Delta tone on my Tele, don't know what difference it makes. Tone stays wide open anyway... I thought noiseless was a lame idea from day one, never bought it. The free market WILL sort out the crap, 10 years will tell. Watered down "Standard" is gonna sell like crazy for a year or two, and gain some die-hard fans just like every other Ugly Duckling guitar always does, but I do not predict staying power for it. Get the last of the real Standards if you are thinking of buying, or simply get the Traditional and put a Standard truss rod cover on it! I trust you'll make your last "good" guitar purchase a winner!
Cobaj Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I wouldn’t stress. The “2008 Standard” is pretty much the same as the previous “Standard” with some minor adjustments or what some may consider to be advancements. They’ve put the word “Standard” back on the truss rod guard, which they took away years ago. The 2008 comes with “Locking Grover” tuners, instead of “Green Keys.” Personally I prefer the Green Keys but whatever, they’re tuners. The 2008 comes with Dunlop Strap locks, which is awesome IMO. The bridge and tailpiece are chrome instead of nickel. The hard case is Snake Skin as apposed to the vinyl reptile figured case. If it’s genuine snake skin, then awesome! Definitely beats vinyl. Otherwise, the specs and grades of the timbers, as well as pickups, are exactly the same.
tonebias Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 The New 08 standard is nothing like my 08 standard premium plus.... Like I said earlier, the neck and the electronics really blow. If I were to get nit picky, I think the tuners are cheap. If they would have went with sperzel tuners then I would say ok... But for a guitar without a tremolo the only thing the lockers do really are make it easier to change strings. I have lockers on my Fender American deluxe strat and I love them for that reason... I like the green keys.
Rame Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Yep' date=' they do... you can see the piece of crap right through the acrylic cover on the back. [/quote'] Can someone please tell me where people are getting the idea these have a circuit board in them??? I mean I haven't seen an 08 standard but I see nothing about a circuit board? And if you believe it does have a circuitboard in it what exactly does the circuit board do?
