About to buy my first LP

I am about to buy my first Les Paul. It's a 1978 tobacco burst standard. Is there anything I should look for aside from the pickup and pots numbers that would verify it being a real 1978 LP? I am buying it from someone on CL and he is sending me the serial number. From doing some research I'm guessing the sn should start with 72 or 73. Are there any other identify features on the body, neck, headstock that only a Gibson would have? I'm just trying to cover my butt and don't want to get ripped off.

thanks

If the instrument was built in 1978, it would have an 8 digit serial number. The first and fifth digit in the serial number would indicate the year it was built (i.e. 7###8###). The second, third and fouth digit in the serial number would range between 001-365. The last three digits would range from 500-and up).
