sloan999 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 not sure if it's a big issue, because i purchased my lp at musicstop [long & mquade] and they seem to be reputable. back of headstock is stamped 'made in usa 2008' but the reciept says 'gibson les paul 2002 w/60 neck- cher sb model #LPS6HSNH ser# 00958XXXX and the pre pack cheklist says LPSTEBCHT ser#01058XXXX i was told that it was because the guitars were on the wall at the store, and the a case might have been sold without the guitar... so the case i got was for a black standard that was on the wall. and i didn't make it a big issue because i figured the reciept i have matches the guitars serial number [00958xxxx] but the, er, case candy seems to be for a different one... if someone else purchased the case for my guitar and got the pre pack checklist for mine n'stuff.. could they eventually claim that i have their guitar? i just wanna make sure i am prepared for any 'sketchy incidents' that might arrive. thankx
Zaphod B Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I can see it being possible that you received the case candy from another guitar. When I purchased my Custom Shop Ice Tea R4, it arrived without the care kit - just a polishing cloth and truss rod tool, apparently, but the guitar did come with all the other hang tags and stuff, and the COA. I called the retailer, who placed a "missing parts" request with Gibson. A couple of weeks later I received a package that had the complete case candy for a Custom shop R8. Go figure.
ChanMan Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Hey Sloan! Grats the new axe! I am not sure about Canadian law, but in the US you can be sued for any reason, including your guitar. The receipt you have showing the S/N would be adequate proof of your legitimate ownership, though. If you bought it with a credit card, they will also maintain a record of the transaction. No comment on the store selling the wrong cases... :P Hope this helps!
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Case candy often doesn't match the guitar in large store where they mix everything up and sell cases etc. That's why COA are not kept in the case. Just register your guitar with Gibson and keep your receipt and you should be as fine as anybody else if there's a question the receipt and COA are all that really matter and the COA is mostly important for resale value.
Tim Plains Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 not sure if it's a big issue' date=' because i purchased my lp at musicstop [long & mquade'] and they seem to be reputable. back of headstock is stamped 'made in usa 2008' but the reciept says 'gibson les paul 2002 w/60 neck- cher sb model #LPS6HSNH ser# 00958XXXX and the pre pack cheklist says LPSTEBCHT ser#01058XXXX As long as the receipt matches the guitar, you're fine. Both of the serial numbers you posted are 2008s, though. That part doesn't make much sense. Long & McQuade did the same thing with my SG. They either sold the case or gave me one from a different SG. The Gibson check list I have does not match my guitar. When I noticed, it was too late and they didn't have my checklist anymore. Oh well, no big deal. If you don't like the guitar, you could use this as a reason to exchange it. Where in Canada are you?
VA_siCkBoy Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Same thing happened to me at GC here in Virginia Beach. They mixed up the cases so when I purchased my ebony Les Paul Junior, the case packing checklist listed a different serial number and color of guitar. No big deal, the serial number on the receipt matched.
sloan999 Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 ...you got a care kit? and a certificate? i had to buy the cloth seperate lol... [now i'm depressed] and no truss rod tool, either. i might have to get one i suppose. and i am going to register at gibson, as soon as i figure out how heheh.. but thanks, i feel a little better about the mix n match case thing

Where in Canada are you?[/quote'] Not sure if i would even want to exchange it...sorta 'love'it... I'm in New Brunswick [Moncton] and originally i wanted the ebony standard but the solid finished had pick guard already attached, and i woulda had to remove it, and have screw holes...and the only other standard they had was the 'burst, and it sounded better than the ebony.... the only real cosmetic flaws with the guitar i got is that the binding is not flush with the neck on the underside, and theres sorta a red line on the binding where it was taped off for painting [thin red lines on the binding... i figure that after i play the heck out of it, the whole finish is gonna be rubbed off anyway so i didn't let it bother me much... plus it makes me not feel guilty if i decide to slap a great big sticker on a guitar with a 'less than perfect'finish. I'd been waiting years to have the oppertunity to have a les paul with a politically motivated, but immature and irrational sticker on my guitar [i still think Sammy Hagar's alien sticker on his l.p. is cool]
mkern Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Music Stop and Long&McQuade (owns Music Stop) are both great organizations and you won't encounter a "stetchy incident" as I'm sure its just the retail sales guys grabbing whatever case is handy and not considering that people are concerned with the little pices of paper inside. I have bought a lot of guitars from L&M and have never experienced anything untoward. If you are missing case candy and care kit, have you considered the guitar could have been used? I got mine at a great price but it was traded in and thus used. Check the price tag with the bar code on it. If the guitar is used, it will clearly indicate it in small print. The company has a no-questions-asked 30-day return policy. If you are not satisfied, inform them and they will order a new guitar and let you keep yours while you wait (at least they do that for me). BTW - Sloan fan? Great band. I bought a Fuzz Factory just to get that sound from their single "Believe"
Thundergod Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Sometimes when they have the guitars on display and happen to have more than one, they f-ck up like this... they give you the wrong case as "they all are the same, aint them?" ... just ask them to find the correct case...
sloan999 Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 i don't believe it was used/returned/resold to me... i paid full price and there was the little tag with string on the headstock [i was tilting the guitar so it wouldn't hit the strings while i tried it out] it just wasn't put on the wall because they were [i assume] trying to make the more expensive sunburst have a better chance of selling twice the price of my standard, i think it was a vos or supreme but sloan is actually my middle name, that i've always gone by...not a tribute to the band. i've always used my real name online because back in the day [omg i'm old ] there was no need for anonymity online. lol. but i do like the band, and in '98 i used to get a kick out of saying that i could potentally see 'myself' in concert [sloan came to Parley Beach for a concert] ... Money City Maniacs... yeah
