These banjo rolls that Roth is about to show you are used more extensively in country music, but you can also hear the technique in plenty of rock music as well. Jimmy Page used banjo rolls in some of his acoustic work, and a much funkier approach was utilized by players like Jerry Reed.

 

Roth demonstrates clearly how to use this unique picking technique in the open G and E positions, which lend themselves well to this style. But, as you'll see, they can also be used in plenty of other keys. He also shows you some excellent practice patterns that can really help incorporate this technique into your own style of playing.
