Tim Plains Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 This isn't about what's the best, just what you prefer. Me, I'll take a nice fat Les Paul neck any day of the week!
slimjimdom Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 50's im not a shredder and I've got E.T. fingers. I find rounder necks more comfortable.
saturn Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I've never played a Reissue neck, but I love my beefy 50s neck so that's what I chose.
hi13ts Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I'm a bit torn on this one. I've been a life-long fan of 60's necks, but ever since I played that fat neck ES-335, I've grown accustomed to it.
canon_mutant Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I thought I liked the 50s neck better until I got AL-230. My hand seems to function better on the 60s profile. Of course, the ES-355 guitar is different so maybe not a fair comparison. Anxious to try this asymetrical 2008 neck to see what it's all about.
GuitarJunkie Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I like a bigger neck like on my '50s neck faded Standards, but not those "stupid-fat" necks on some of the VOS reissues.
ChanMan Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I got a 60's neck... it was faster. But the 50's neck felt more comfortable. I don't reckon I've ever held an R anything to compare....
HeadCase Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Reissue.... Fat & chunky. Feels comfortable to me. 60s or slim taper.... no thanks.
AXE® Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I went with 50's But after about a minute i really can't tell , just play em fer chris'sake
tonebias Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I like the 50's neck, had a 60's but I honestly think the 50's neck gives a better tone and it just feels better. I have fat short fingers but I play the same on either neck, they aren't all that different. The 'New' Standard neck is unplayable to me, tried it, don't care for it.
Cobaj Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I like both the 50’s and 60’s necks. My Standard has a 60’s neck, but the next LP I get I’d like to have a 50’s style/fat neck just for something with a fatter tone to mix it up.
Thundergod Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 50s necks for me... I dont like the 60s or thiner ones... not at all.
Silverbursted Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 It's either 50's or 60's for me. Very decisive Kenny.
Silverbursted Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 My hands aren't very big, so I went with a 60s on the Standard, then I played the fat reissue neck, and it just felt more comfortable, then came along the 50s neck on the Traditional...Stick a fork in me, I'm done. 50s all the way.
Tom99SS Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 '50s neck for me. Also liked the R8 neck better than R9 or R0 when I tried them.
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 50's followed by the reissue in all honesty when I played the new standard felt like a 60 to me asymmetrical was nothing I even felt after a minute or so. I guess I don't care very much as long as it's not a 2x4 sized classical neck or a overfinished sticky new Rickenbacker finish I'm fine with it
Zaphod B Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I can't vote because I like 'em all. Over time I've found myself less particular about neck profiles, and more interested in the musicality of the instrument.
RichCI Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I really have no preference as I tend to switch around to different guitars with different shapes fairly often - LP, Strat, Tele, SG Jr, etc. - and they all feel pretty different. However, I do tend to favor my Strat; it's a 57 RI.

wilerty Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I've always preffered the 60s over the 50s. About two weeks ago I walked into GC and played the new 08 Standard, and thought it was nice, but i didn't compare it to the others. last weekend I tried it again and then compared it to an 07 Standard 60s they had. I think the new 08 Standard neck will not go over well with people who like the 60s neck. All the people who voted for the 60s neck above will not be buying the new Standard. I think Gibson took a huge risk trying to only produce one neck for the new Standard that will satisfy everyone ... It won't work.

[/quote'] I think they went with 2 guitars, the Traditional and the Standard, as opposed to 2 necks. The voting on the Traditionals so far has been overwhelmingly positive. But I agree that it is a pretty big risk going with the new neck style, given their past success.
