onewilyfool Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I bought a set of these.....they come in small medium and large and X-Large......for my hands I use all large and X-large pics including the thumb (and you know what they say about large hands????? see answer below) http://www.alaskapik.com/ I got these cause I broke some nails on my picking hand.....They are interesting because the clip under the fingernail, and you still have some sensation with the "pad" of your finger open. It takes a while to get used to, but the sound and feel is great compared to standard steel finger pics, AND you can actually "manicure" the nails to the length that fits your playing style....One sound that is fantastic is when I use the back of the "nails" and strum down....very nice sound..... (big hands = big GLOVES.....oh I see what YOU were thinking!!!! shame on you!!!)
jannusguy Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 interesting concept. love the high tech sizing chart!
JOESTONE Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I thought about getting acrylic nails but don't want to be seen in a nail salon :)
guitarstrummer Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 One of the guys giving a clinic at the Homecoming two years ago used these and talked about them. He said they work well, but it took a long time (over six months) for him to get used to using them and even longer before he was good at it. And he was an excellent professional player. I bought some to try, but could never get used to them.
zombiewuff Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I've heard of classical players shaping and gluing on a section cut from the shell of a ping pong ball in a pinch. These seem like a logical extension of that general idea. Thanks for the link.
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I tried them a year or two back, never could get them to work consistently felt weird and always feel loose. good luck and thanks for the post I'll get em out and try them again

TommyK Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I've got a set of 3 for i, m, a. These don't work for my thumb, I used a standard Dunlop that spurs to the side of the thumb. I had to shape them fit the shape of the flesh under the nails as my finger nails are not all identical, nor the same arc as the factory picks I had to mark each with permanent marker so I don't get them mixed up. I haven't had them out in quite some time. Fact is, I don't know exactly where they are. I like them because I can feel the string with my finger tip before strumming. They have them in brass now... interesting....
TWilson Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 For about 20 years I used the silver metal National finger picks. I used them all the time as I rarely used a flat pick. I did buy some of the ones you mentioned here and I see I still have them in my bag full of old picks, thumb picks etc. Maybe I'll haul them out and give them a fair try. I've just been using the bare fingers of late. I did buy some finger picks that are more like my Nationals, but they are cut out to allow the pad of the finger to contact the strings. I have not given these a fair try either. I guess I need to quit being so unfair and try these things out. Here's the ones I'm talking about. Click on accessories, then picks and scroll down. https://www.artisanguitars.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=1548aa268e0b65c/shopdata/index.shopscript?gclid=CJinkNbkmJUCFQRfagodmAmnOg
