Putting a cover on an open coiled humbucker?

Hi, I own a Junior Epiphone SG, the kind in a box, and I'm trying to make it look a bit less... cheap.

It's renovation includes painting it British Racing Green, sanding the pickguard to the white, replacing the tuners, and revamping the pickups, so I was wondering if it is safe to put a basic Gibson pickup cover over the stock open coil pickup currently in the guitar.

Any information or advice would be wonderful, thanks.

Just make sure you get it fit on very tight AND it's recommended that you clamp it (carefully, like with rubber-padded clamps) and solder the bottom edges to the baseplate of the pickup to keep it from vibrating or falling off. Also, a lot of folks put a piece of masking/electrical tape over the flat poles (the one's covered by the pickup) before putting the cover on to help minimize the possibility of noise from the poles rubbing on the cover (I think that's what they said anyway).
