Oddball1972 Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Hello all I'm hoping that someone can help me out with a query about an sg that I've just bought second hand. It's says on the headstock "Les Paul Model" and on the trussrod cover "The Paul" On the back the serial No reads "92050341" Now whats confusing me is that I thought that "The Paul" models where only made from 79-82 yet that serial number would indicate a year of manufacture of 1990. The only thing I can think of is that it's a replacement neck on it. I know that gibson serial no's from the late seventies can be confusing to say the least, so any help or ideas as to the age of the guitar would be of help. Thanks
Murph Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Man, you got me. I own a 79 "The SG" it's Walnut, has the "velvet brick" ceremic uncovered humbuckers, (bridge is cream/black) and is almost too hot. I used it on 8/12 of the "DOUBLE AUGHT" cd in 1999 (cdbaby.com). It slayed with the Marshall JCM900 I was using at the time, but is now only used for occasional studio work. I knew a guy that owned "The Paul", but never really looked at it, we were in different bands and I never heard it, ect. Best of luck. Murph.
NeoConMan Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Email Gibson Customer Service with your info, you should get a response fairly quick. If not, I can call them for you from here in the states and see what I can get but it will be at least tomorrow.
charlie brown Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Yeah, that's odd! I looked up Gibson "The Paul," and got nothing but the normal LP shaped guitars, with that name. So, either the neck was changed(?), or it's a very rare guitar? Gibson CS should be able to tell you, especially with the serial number. OR, try www.guitardaterproject.org Might find out, where it was made, and when. CB Just checked...according to that serial number, it was made at the Nashville plant, July 24th, 1990 production number 41

Hall Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Oddball: Original, The Pauls, were made in 78 & 79. 78s were mahogony; 79's were walnuts. Not painted finishes. Each was 2 or 3 piece bodies, ebony freboard, dots, alnicos, jumbo frets, speed knobs, no frills. Best necks ever made! Sometime in the past several years, Gibson ran a new version of The Paul, with nitro finish and resembling the Studio Les Paul. I, never saw the SG, but that does not mean there wasn't such a run. The thing that has me wondering is it just does not seem as if the finished models were as far back as 1990. Maybe there was a run I missed when I was doing other things. I'm not near any books right now. They have little value, 'cept to an owner such as me. I would not sell my 79 The Paul for any realistic price.
Oddball1972 Posted August 19, 2008 Author Posted August 19, 2008 Good Evening All I have sent an email to customer service at gibson to see if they can give me any advice on my sg query. If anyone on here would like to see a couple of photos of my frankenstein of an sg let me know and I can email them to you. If I find out anything from gibson customer services I'll let you all know. The only good thing is even it is a replacement neck, she's still sweet as honey, with a little sting in her tail. At least she'll do until I can get the money together for a lovely little 76 sg standard in immaculate condition that i have my eye on.
