jon
Hi there, I took my rarely played SG Standard out of the case for the first time in months the other day and the high E string was touching the pickup. Called the local guitar shop and they want £40 as a standard setting up fee. Is there an easy way to fix this problem. If not is £40 a fair price? Thanks for any suggestions
MGrd
Lower the pickup at the site the string is touching it. Maybe the whole pickup at both sites has to be lowered. If it's to near at the strings, the magnetism of the pickup will pull them towards itself. This so called "Stratitis" happens more at the neck pickup rather than at the bridge one (and esp. with single coils)
jon
Thanks for that MGrd, v kind of you. Is there an easy explanation of how I lower the pickup?
MGrd
Assuming you have a standard pickup (480, 490 etc.) you'll find one screw at each "small" side of the pickup. This one is for adjusting the height of that side. Please do not confuse it with the screws of the pick guard. These are around the border of it. jon
It's an SG Standard with the two chrome pickups. Many thanks for the help.
cordeab
What do you use as a standard measurement for the gap between strings and pole pieces of each pickup?
jon
Sorry cordeab I don't know, I'm not sure of any of the technical stuff
rafaelh
This might help or get you started.....have to scroll down to P/U height adjustment. http://mysite.verizon.net/jazz.guitar/guitarsetup.htm#Truss%20Rod%20Adjustment They use a strat for an example on this site, but....LOL...it's got pictures, besides IMO they're basically the same procedures. http://www.kinman.com/html/toneWorkshop/tone.htm#setup Instead of rulers and what not, even with glasses my eyes aren't what they use to be, IMO sticking a nickel between the strings and pickups can get you close to specs...I think. Then again I never really bothered with spec settings to much, I find it allot easier for me just doing it by ear. Raf ...Oops...just re-read your post. Thought you was talking overall P/U adjustment....sorry. Again...if I do mess with the pole pieces, which I hardly ever find a need to anymore, I'll do it by ear. I belive most evreybody just adjusts the heights on them the same way and to there own taste. I don't recall ever seeing anything about a specific heights for that. Some one else might know....again sorry.
cordeab
Thanks rafaelh that was exactly what I was looking for. Im definitely going to give your nickel between the strings and PUs idea a try. The first page did give general specs for Gibsons as neck pickup 3/32" on bass and trble side, bridge 1/16' bass and treble side. Sounds like a great place to start from. Thanks again! rafaelh
You know I was reading your original post again and it seem kind of weird to me for one string, or the pickup height for that matter I guess, to have gotten that out of wack just by sitting in the case. I know a neck might.....have you checked it? Nah....probably not...just thinking out loud here, besides I guess if it was the neck there might be allot more stuff out of adjustment. Then again what do I know....you seen my avatar? Anyhow you're very welcome and good luck. Raf
