crossroadsnyc Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Hey, I am in the process of selling a couple guitars right now - are any of you familiar with sites other than ebay which are good for selling guitars? Perhaps there is a site dedicated exclusively to the sale of used instruments that I don't know about? Any help or suggestion would be appreciated - interested in knowing all my options. Thanks!
rjc guitar Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 ok...I'll ask: what are you selling? And +1 for craigslist, anything I post on there sells within 2 days at the longest.
Bluemoon Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 It depends on the guitar. I sold a Tacoma accoustic on a forum that had a "for sale" topic area.
NeoConMan Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 The Gear Page is a forum with a pretty comprehensive Lost & Found/want ad area. Just don't run afoul of the Bleeding Heart Liberal moderators from the sanctuary city of San Francisco. Dare I say it, I moved a couple Gibson guitars on the PRS forum.
Les Paul Fanatic Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Another vote for Craiglist - Craigslist +1 Ebay + 1000 Better off with Ebay however you can go to the nearest music store to you and see what they'll offer you because sometimes you can get excellent offers there as well.
crossroadsnyc Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 ok...I'll ask::) what are you selling? And +1 for craigslist' date=' anything I post on there sells within 2 days at the longest.[/quote'] Thanks for the suggestions - all of you. Very much appreciated. Yeah, I've used craigslist a couple times and it's worked very well - but they were for lower ticket items. I'm a bit apprehensive about letting a stranger over to my place on a bigger ticket item due to the stories in nyc about craigslist being used by criminals to rob unsuspecting sellers. My girlfriend recommended just meeting someone at a neutral location - like a Sam Ash or something - so they can try out the guitar and make sure it works, and then the transaction can be done in a safer environment - any of you do this? Ok - just to make this clear - I am NOT spamming or trying to sell anything in here - just responding to the question from RJC... I'm selling 3 guitars - all of them are in pristine condition 1) Fender American Deluxe Telecaster (I tried selling it on ebay, but the guy who was suppose to purchase it flaked out and didn't pay me - hence my reason for options other than ebay which seems to be kinda sketchy) 2) Gibson Les Paul Standard - Heritage Cherry (the new R8 makes it hard to justify keeping this since they are so similar - tough to let go of though since I love the flame on it and it's in great condition. sounds freakin' killer too - got a good one) 3) Gibson SG Special Faded - Cherry They are all beautiful guitars, but I need to thin out my gear and simplify. The one that's hardest to let go of is the SG - there is something special (no pun intended) about it that just feels and sounds better than any SG I've ever had - and I've had a lot of them. Anyway, if anyone has done what my gf suggested above by meeting someone in a neutral place, can you let me know if it went well? That just seems like a safer option since I have some nice things in my home that I am not comfortable gambling on having robbed. Thanks again for the suggestions!
Les Paul Fanatic Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Definetly meet somewhere public Sam Ash would be a good one and if they're serious about buying your guitars cash up front or find a new buyer, no good faith payments they all say that and as soon as they have the merchandise you never hear from them again. I know from personal experience with that. Or if payments is the only way they can do it, then keep the guitar until your asking price is completely covered. So if you need anymore advice just ask, and good luck.
rybass Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Definately don't let strange guitar hoarders into your house. I've met people at banks (some have a meeting room you can use if you are a customer), Kinko's and music stores. Sam ash would be a good place so they could try them out on different amps. Freaks me out to have someone over to buy something from me at my house. They get the run of the joint and can see your other gear and possibly get ideas about walking out of there with more than they came for. Can't trust people these days.

I'd like to avoid paypal charges, ebay charges, etc., and just keep all the cash for myself (Greed Works).
Tim Plains Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I've sold two Gibbies. Listed them both on craigslist and kijiji. Got no responses from craigslist. Sold them both through kijiji.

I hated so much as selling a pedal to someone over here for the exact reason you mentioned - they can see the rest of my home. the bank idea is pretty clever - I like it. safe environment.
Les Paul Fanatic Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Bank is a new one, but any music store in general will work, that way they can't see any of your other gear and you can get second opnions from sales associates at the store as to the price and condition of what you are selling so that way the buyer isn't getting screwed over cause I've experienced that end of buying process I like to get second opinions from some who's knowledgeable about that sort of thing.

I was actually wondering what the legal aspect of doing a transaction at a music store might be. since they are in business to sell their own guitars, am I trampling their ground by selling my own in there? from a legal standpoint my guess is that I'm unlawfully using their store as a point of sale - from a moral standpoint, I kind of feel like that's close to crossing the boundaries. would a sales person take offense? I have good relationships w/the people in there, so I would hate to step on toes or cause offense. what do you all think? from a legal / moral standpoint?
rybass Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Exchange money and guitars outside but let them check it out inside. Most guitar stores encourage you to bring your guitar in and try out amps and effects so keep your business to yourself and they probably won't bother you. Or just ask the manager ahead of time, if they know you I don't see why they would have a problem as long as you do the business transaction outside.
jnstrom Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I like the Bank idea. eBay seems to work for me as long as the seller has good feedback. Also if you call some pawn shops you might find a good deal hiding out there. Good luck
