2001 SG 62' Reissue - Faded from red to brown?

So I bought an 2001 SG 62 Reissue a while back in a lovely 'walnut' type of brown. I don't know if they made 62' reissues in brown in 2001 but the weird thing about is that under the pickguard, control panel.. it's red!

If it were refinished you would think they would atleast screw off the pickguard so I'm thinking maybe it faded from red to brown. But is this even possible?

It faded to brown. Its red under the pickguard because that area did not come in contact with air or light. Same thing happens on the original bursts. On the 58-60 bursts, the color usually faded from a bright cherry burst to a dull yellow-orange burst (lightburst), or to the point where there was barely any burst left (unburst). If the pickguards were left on, if you take them off now you will see the original cherry sunburst. Same thing just on a different guitar. Hope this helps.

I was lurking around Gibsons site in 2001 when shopping for my '61RI. I don't remember them putting out a '62 that year.

Just remember the USA '61 and the Historic model ( maybe that's the '62?). They only listed as coming in Heritage cherry, and I think the Historic version was Faded cherry. No walnut. They were the only small pick guard models out that year as far as I could see. Is your case brown with pink interior?

Maybe I should take off my guard and see if there is a diff.
