craigh
I have a '54 ES-150 with a warped pickguard. Is is plastic or Bakelite? Can I put it under some books to flatten it out. Also the rubber towards the top near the top screw fell off. What's the best glue to use? Thanks. Craig
retrorod
The books might work in 50 years. Not sure about the rubber that you refer too? Where/what is it? Rod
craigh
It's a block of rubber about 1/2" X 1/4" & one end is glued to the bottom of the pickguard & the other half rests on the guitar body. Craig
L5Larry
My general advise as to deteriorating pickguards is to replace them. The older pickguards were made of celluloid, and once they start to go, nothing will stop it. Eventually it will start to off-gas very toxic chemicals that will eat the plating right of any metal parts and damage the finish. Same with rubber, when it starts to deteriorate it gets very brittle and nasty, but the outside layers can permanently stick to stuff. I would remove these parts from your guitar immediately, seal them up in a plastic bag, and store them away from the guitar, and make sure to clean any residue off the guitar. I'd like to see pics of the guitar and parts in question for I've done many pickguard replacements and pattern cut a bunch of repro's. I'd be glad to try to help with some details when I see exactly what we're talking about.
