J-45 (2004) Gibson Logo

Hi All

I bought my first ever Gibson acoustic the other week (a 2004 cherry sunburst J-45). I'm very pleased with it but noted there was some 'shadowing' on the Gibson logo. This is not a major problem, but wondered if anyone out there had any explanation for why it may occur?

Thanks very much,

Jamie

Cheers guys - couple of good possibilities there. Not knowing the previous owner, I'll just have to stick to guessing. Any ideas on how to go about sorting it?

I just checked my headstock once more, and it has some darker and lighter areas too, although not as much contrast as on yours. But might it not be just the colour of the pearl? One more thing to rule out some possibilities: is the finish on the darker area ok or damaged?

C D S.....Capo Discoloration Syndrome! Does your Gibson Logo suffer from CDS? Then you need ....GIO, Get it Out! Prevention is the best deterrent. DO NOT leave your capo affixed to your headstock for months at a time! Get It Out can take away unsightly capo marks from any Gibson headstock logo.

Just send $1199.00 dollars to...GIO BR-549 Bum****,Nebraska for a 4oz. bottle of Get It Out. Guaranteed OR half your money back

Doesn't look like the pearl version, as far as I see it's the 2004 good older golden one. I kind of like the shade. . .

(J-45's can take it. . . .)

By the way, do you know if your neck differs from 08 09 00's ?

(I meant the guitars neck vily ;)

LOL I thought that all modern Gibbies had pearl, so I figured it was the picture giving it the yellowish colour. Still a lot to learn!

Wear from a capo being left clipped to the headstock?

Good possibility - although shape of discoloration seems to be 'crescent-like', rather than angular?

Hi - no lacquer damage in that area at all - all nice and sealed and smooth.

Hi - The logo is indeed golden in colour (what materials are used for this?). Regards neck - I couldn't tell you how it compares to those later years. Another thing, when I look at the guitar it appears less 'cherry' than I would have imagined cherry sunburst would be (which is ok) - although when I look at it in pictures it looks more cherry (weird!).

Anyway, cheers for all your input so far guys - much appreciated. I'm pretty much a newbie to the more serious end acoustic guitars - was electric (jaguar/telecaster) until having two kids out a (temporary) stop to that, so any further info at all about my guitar is well appreciated (I have attached some further images for your reference).

Hi Jamie and welcome to the forum. You say that the darker part of the h/stock logo is a sort of crescent shape, and that the Cherry sunburst is not as deep as you would have expected, this leads me to think that the sun caused these effects! Say the guitar had spent a bit of time in a shop window leaning back on a stand, with just a part of another guitar (or something else) hanging down just in front of the h/stock, you may get that kind of fading, with the sun not affecting the bits of the guitar in the shade. Anyway, just a theory.

As for the Gold Gibson logo, it is silk screened on. And one final point, I think that faded cherry Sunburst looks absolutely beautiful on that J-45, if you ever want to trade her on, let me know! In the mean time enjoy her.

Wow, looks like a child from a j45 and a hummingbird. And then with the golden logo, she looks hot!

Very true looks awesome

Thanks Steve. Never thought about the sun possibility, would explain the more curved shape of the discolouration. The burst colouring is lovely isn't it. This one is a keeper .

This cherry 45 looks beautiful and special (I got the vintage SJ version in my avatar). Why don't you think of the logo as an extra little shadow burst.

the capo theory is close.... but the curved shape throws that off. the real answer? it's a clip on tuner. the perfect shape and location.
