whiteshields1830 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Hi all, new to these forums and potential gibson owner (hopefully) but im quite cautious of the fake and genuine gibsons out there, especially on ebay, as my friend has recently bought a gibson on there and was told it was a fake. Currently i have 4 gibson les paul standards im looking at, all on ebay, and different set ups. (also would $2100 be a good price for a gibson les paul standard? i know they RRP for about $3500, but i hope to get the $2000 thereabouts back in 10 years time or something) http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260274926653&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260275360557&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300250451454&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230281719117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=013 also let me know which one is cooler haha, im having trouble deciding on sunburst, honey burst or wine red. Any help is greatly appreciated. Hopefully get my hands on a sweet gibson.
Aaresz Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Before I begin lets talk about my consulting fee.................... :) Each of them look good to my untrained eye, you'll have to decide what you like best.
MikeRom Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 They all look legitimit to me. The honeyburst is one sweet looking ax but I aslo dig the wine read with the brown case. $2100 US is an OK price for a brand new standard, don't know about how good it is in Autralia.
whiteshields1830 Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 I meant $2100 in AUS, which is about $1800-1900 US? is that a fair price to get on them? Also does the honey burst (or red wine) retain their value? theyre not the popular colour like sunburst, but id like to hope that when i purchase these guitars that if i sell them(hope not) in the future they will retain a $2000 therebaouts price tag?
Les Paul Fanatic Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Real, and if you want to double check to be sure pull the serial #'s off the back of the headstock and check w/ Gibson homepage, you should be able to anyways.
Thundergod Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 The honey burst is the one that looks better to me regarding finish, but, it looks like its been to hell and back... So I would pass on that onoe unless he takes the price down by half. At those prices why dont you buy a new one?
Thundergod Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Of course they could be fake pics... has happened before, you bid on a nice gibson and at your door arives a china ZakkWylde sunburst special with skull inlays and special gibson pickups... WTF???
whiteshields1830 Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 The honey burst is the one that looks better to me regarding finish' date=' but, it looks like its been to hell and back... So I would pass on that onoe unless he takes the price down by half. At those prices why dont you buy a new one?[/quote'] Yea thats the thing about the honey burst...it should go for about $AUS 1800... which i might consider (maybe not now since u told me that it is in abismal condition - chips, scratches, dents). - you mean half as in $AUS 1000 for it? But Gibson standards here are $AUS 3500 (discounted from 4000). which is already 1.5 k above what im paying. So id rather get a 2nd hand in good condition (like only a scratch or dent) for $AUS 2100, or a really dinged up one for really cheap. Again i am really noob in guitars...and only had a epi, so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thundergod Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 I didnt know they went for that much new over there... so maybe you could offer 1500 for the honey burst... lets see what the other guys think about it... Also can you play them before buying them or do you have to buy them from the net without playing them first? Maybe the one that looks better plays awfully...
LT ED Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 They all look fine to me . Why do you think there fake???
MikeRom Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Look like they're all from the same dealer in Melbourne, reputable place? Sez if you live there you can go pick it up. Sounds like a positive to me.
UnGauGeD Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Like the vintage look on the honey burst! Looks quite legit to me! Price wise it's ok....
NeoConMan Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Also does the honey burst (or red wine) retain their value? theyre not the popular colour like sunburst' date=' but id like to hope that when i purchase these guitars that if i sell them(hope not) in the future they will retain a $2000 therebaouts price tag? [/quote'] Don't EVER buy one thinking you'll sell it at a profit, tough enough for a DEALER to make a buck on a guitar. I've sold twenty guitars over the years, actually MADE money on only two - and that wasn't very much. Considering value, color isn't gonna matter as much as condition if it's used. Some people avoid the sunbursts because "everybody" has one. Get what you like, don't worry that you paid $10 too much or stupid sh!t like that. If the price is right, the guitar works for you and you are happy, what else could you hope for? Enjoy the guitar, don't worry over nothing, and good luck...
cudamax2343 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 The photo's might be a real Gibson or half of a photo that is. Why be stupid a send that kinda of cash across ebay when you already have doubts. Ebay will only give you 200 back if you get burned. Go with a ma and pop store or a major chain mail order man if your going to spend that kinda dough. If no store is around by you, take a long ride to one. Be smart.

I have doubt about ebay, not becuase ive bid on anything or bought any guitar there (although ive bought a fender 1996 clapton sig. series and legit for a good price), but i think its what i feel is a fair value for a guitar, cutting out the middle man of dealers who earn 60% or more of the mark up. But Neoconman: youre probably right about that. Considering at a retail of $4000 and only selling for $2000 there is alot of losses, but hey, if i get it at $2000 then in the future sell for $1500 its still a much lower loss than if i got it at $4000. Cheers
Aaresz Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I've purchased all sorts of "expensive" items of of eBay, including guitars, without having any issues. You just have good sense in you your dealing with.
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 EDIT - the only real concern I would have on the validity of the guitars is a couple of the photos look to be idetical or maybe changed slightly as an example look at the pic showing the large scrape on the horn it appears to be the same photo of the same damage yet the colors are different to make it appear like a different guitar. I guess that it could be very similar damage to the two guitars from a bad rack or something but that would be almost impossible to imagine or it could be a totally honest mistake since all laess pauls look kinda the same from a wierd back angle or he could be a rip-off using the same set of photos off the internet which he photoshop and use to snare unwary or new buyer.... All that aside if it turns out he's not a sleezo then; Yep I like the Honeyburst also I love the worn in color and the damage all looks like well earned and honest wear and scars from a gigging guitar and not some kid throwing it around. People pay big money to have a guitar look like that and then a extra 300 for the Lifton style case which has a pretty cool mojo of it's own going. No regular issue guitar is a good investment in a normal ownership cycle. if somebody took ten new Gibson and put them in a vault somewhere so 50-100 years from now they could do the walla look at this on the future version of antiques road show that's gonna be money. Your a player so buy one that talks to you and then play the frets off of it. instead of resale think of the satisfaction and therapy dollars playing a nice guitar is worth I's seriously look at that Honey if it was local and not in OZ
