Tim Plains Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Anybody else hate first person shooters? I used to like them but I can't stand them now. I just find they're all basically the same game with different themes. The only FPS I can say I actually liked in the past five years were the two Rainbow 6 Vegas games...but those were 3rd person just as much as they were 1st and shooting people from behind corners never gets old. I love driving games and 3rd person games. I also can't stand RGPs. The only ones I've actually liked were Mass Effect because the fighting was fun and I didn't have to read the equivalent of a novel to get through the game. Tom Clancy's GRAW 1 & 2 are up there as being two of the best games I've ever played. Gears of War, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry (first one), Assassin's Creed...those are my types of games. Halo, Medal of Honor, Resistance, no thanks...
EvanPC Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I dig'em. Though only one genre of many that I like. Some guys only like sports games, and some only like shooters...I like'em all usually. Haven't really gotten into any RPGs though. Don't have the attention span... Killzone 2 was a great FPS. Same with Bioshock. Wish I hadn't sold it. I'm not a fanatic, but I also like to CoD games by Infinity Ward. I'm not a PC gamer, and I'm a 1 console guy, so I can't speak for Xbox exclusives... Great third person games (for me) have been Uncharted 1 & 2, Dead Space, etc.
dem00n Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I love all games, im not loyal to one genre in gaming. Im kinda loyal to one console, i love my 360. Ive never had the red rings of death and i play everyday! Though i did buy an elite because i spilled OJ on my old 360. My fav game is elder scrolls oblivion, i can play that game for days, along with Halo, Mass Effect and fallout series.
Andre S Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I like my PS3. I had sold it and then bought it back later on. I like all the Call of Duty games.....especially MW2, Black Ops is alright so far. Not too much into driving games, not since some old PS2 games.... 1st person shooters are alright but I do prefer 3rd.
SG FAN Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Getting pretty bored with Black Ops, playing a lot of Fallout: New Vegas.

I mean, I do like some first-person shooters--the Half-Life games and Bioshock come to mind--but my preference as far as killing-stuff-games is towards third-person. Halo was fun too, except that the story was totally ripped from Larry Niven's Ringworld novels . But yeah, the Tom Clancy TPS games are great (have you played any of the Splinter Cell games, Tim? I think you'd dig them) and the Ninja Gaiden games are awesome, and so on and so forth. The Grand Theft Auto series is also swell.

dem00n Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Getting pretty bored with Black Ops, playing a lot of Fallout: New Vegas. Did you get Dead Money?
Vette77 Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 yea rainbow six was a fantastic fps, the cover system really made that a fun game. i still have fond memories of matches on calypso casino and lvu campus...... games like medal of honor and black ops are nice...but they really cant keep my attention. for me its like 3 matches then i just get sick of it, its just repetitive. ive been playing fps games for quite some time...interesting to see that not much has really changed, at least in terms of competitive multiplayer...at least fps games like rainbow six and the like were able to take it and make it less generic, but for as long as theyve had call of duty with its massive popularity it has always been the same run-and-gun with improved graphics. nowadays im playing games like new vegas, with the new dlc and patch that fixed the countless bugs the game had, and assassins creed brotherhood. really fantastic games. also some new dead rising game came out in the arcade marketplace, so im definitely gonna be checking that out. and most of all...psyched for SKYRIM
dbreslauer Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 i don't really like them either, but i think it's directly related to the fact that i stink at them. -Don
Californiaman Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Here we go. I do not approve of video games where the object is to kill someone. I've seen first hand the carnage of young men who become whacked out on video games designed to desensitize a human beings natural inclination to not kill. Human beings need to be trained to kill. These video games do just that. I do not allow them in my house. My children, all of them under 12, do not play them. My thoughts have been backed up by studies that prove out what I'm saying. The nightly news shows often unfortunately, bare witness to this as well. You may return to your regularly scheduled programming.
dem00n Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Yeah and the movies they show to your kids at school dont have violence at all! Lets not forgett about TV and music! All devils work!
Californiaman Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Yeah and the movies they show to your kids at school dont have violence at all! Lets not forgett about TV and music! All devils work! We monitor what we want our kids to see. And since they're under 12 and they go to a private school, we pretty much know what's going on in the classroom. Especially since I'm on the PTF board. So you're snarky remark has little weight dem00n. Better to be safe than sorry.
SG FAN Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Did you get Dead Money? Yes, I did, haven't done anything with it, though. Trying to get done with the main storyline, first.

Gangs of them, scientifically documented/witnessed, going out on killing sprees? The people that carry out these acts you mention were not driven to them by video games. They had issues with or without games, and likely just had parents who failed them, as well as society.
grampa Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I don't understand the fascination with putting oneself in a situation where you are being shot at with high powered weapons. I can't see that as a game. It's not fun.
SG FAN Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Also, violent video games are no worse than violent movies or music. They have ratings, just like movies, don't blame the games, blame bad parenting. If they are too young for the game, don't let them buy it, simple as that.
Andre S Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 How is Red Dead Redemption? Its kinda funny, we as guitar players don't like gamers who brag about their performance at games like guitar hero since they aren't actually playing guitar....I wonder if there are soldiers out there laughing at all the online videos of beating games like Call Of Duty on the hardest mode.....

I've thought about this too: I have an 8 year old and a 3 year old, and do exercise caution and control with what they see and play. However, I also don't want games to become "forbidden fruit." Hopefully as a parent I can get them to recognize the difference between fantasy and reality without making anything verboten, so to speak. The concern is certainly valid, as humans do appear to be intrinsically violent, and non-violent behavior needs to be taught (my opinion). Don
Thundergod Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 A while ago my favorite games were all 1st person: Duke Nukem, Doom, Wolfenstein and such. Then I started playing 3rd person games and I could never go back... it's amazing what that little difference can do to how you play and what you do in the game. My favorites are Silent Hill (all of them except for the iPhone version which is in 1st person) and Hitman (all of them) in hitman you can chose between 1st and 3rd person and 1st feels really weird.

While I'd go to the mat backing your right to raise your children as you see fit I have to disagree with your statements. Additionally any kid under 15 should not be playing these type of games. IMHO That being said I don't think a video game or TV show nor movie can or will cause anyone to commit an act of violence. If that were the case we all would be killing everyone. Look at the shows we watched when I was growing up, westerns of all types shooting or hanging the bad guys, the Green Hornet, Batman and the list goes on and on. As far as the studies go I can show you a study that dispels every study you have showing they cause violence. Studies are usually motivated by the group funding the study so I put very little weight on any study that isn't completely against the funding parties values. For instance I would put a lot of weight on a study claiming pot use is good for us if that study was funded by a group that is fighting decriminalization, but that's just me. This is from someone who doesn't play any video game since they took Tempest out of the arcade!
Thundergod Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Good point Bowdiddley! Studies are often biased. I think parents should know what their children are doing and allow/prevent them from doing stuff they know is wrong or can have certain unwanted consecuences, so for Caliman on rising his children the way he knows is better for them (and for everyone else). Videogames should be about fantasy and shouldn't be made so you can relate them to real life (i.e. "grand theft auto" which I've seen 5 y/o kids playing no wonder they grow up with twisted sense of what's right or wrong, daddy alowed them to shoot prostitutes and burn peasants while stealing cars)
ChanMan Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I love FPS games. The Battlefield line, and more recently Call of Duty, both of which are currently on my HD. (Along with Mount and Blade: Warband, EQ, DDO and a few others) My kids have played whatever games have taken their fancy... nary a murderous scoundrel among them. They've seen far worse in movies and on the news than the shrink ray in Duke Nukem or the BFG. Funny, my eldest boy has collected a wealth of knowledge on both modern and archaic weapons from the games he's played. I guess it just depends on the kids. Mine are exceptionally bright, as tested while they were in school. ymmv.
