Les Paul + Leslie

Gibson CS

Recommended Posts

I just mentioned in another thread, but ill post here as well.

I just ordered a Leslie speaker to accent my Les Paul. It should be here in May.

For those who dont know, its a rotating speaker that were designed for Hammond B3

organs. Guitarists picked up on the "whirling" sound and made it their own.

George Harrison used one alot while recording Abbey Road.

Hendrix, Clapton, Frampton...the list goes on.

I have always wanted one, and now use a BossRT20 to get close to that sound.

Its great!...but somethings missing.

I cant wait to receive it!

Anyone else use one?

Deepblue, I remember those monster speakers with the rotating speakers. It's cool watching the speaker rotate like on a turntable. I always pitied our keyboard guy hauling all that junk around. I did not know that they still make them.

Kaicho...

Yes, they still make them. Now they have a model made just for guitars. its called the Leslie G37

Much lighter then say the 147, or 122 ( I may be wrong with the model numbers )

Once I get it, im going to give my Boss Rotary pedal away to some kid who cant afford guitar goodies!

Pay it forward I always say.

Heres a Pic of the Leslie...

The Lesle was made to accent the Hammond B3 organ. The lovely whirling sound that you hear.

Sometime I guess it was in the 1960's guitar players thought it would be cool to hook up a guitar to a Leslie.

WOW!..It sounded so cool! Do you know the song " Badge?" Eric clapton & George Harrison. Well the bridge

in that song is played through a Leslie. Ringo Star?...The song " It dont come easy?" Thats a Leslie.

Its such a great sound. The ultimate chorus pedal and then some!

Not everyone sells them. They are usually sold at organ stores who deal with Hammond.

The big heavy wooden cabinet ones goes for around $3000. They arent cheap.

the leslie is a great effect for guitar, when i recorded a song with my band,i put the guitar signal trough my keyboardist´s leslie....it sounded amazing....oh,and you should try putting a EHX pog in the middle....and put the second and the first octave full up....there is a slim chance that you might notice that it is a guitar when you hear the playback.

  • 9 months later...

i came across this forum while Googling "guitar leslie" and couldn't help but add my .02

i have been on a lifelong quest to find a Leslie simulator that nails the sound on "Badge" by Cream, "it don't come easy"-Ringo, most Geo.Harrison work Sgt. Pepper and beyond, "air that i breathe"-Hollies, "wildflower"-Skylark, "well all right"-Blind Faith..you get the drift

i'm not talking about a SRV Vibratone-type rig.."cold shot", "couldn't stand the weather"..that tone is very bass-rotor....

this is a growling, grinding , mid-rangy tone i have ONLY been able to get with my Leslie 145 cabinet...a too-big and too -nice of a honkin' cab to haul to a gig

i have/have had a number of Leslie sim stomp boxes including H-K Rotosphere, Korg G4, and Dynacord CLS 222....these are all fine for keyboard but still don't give me that true Doppler effect of the L cab.

i have recently found out about the Motion Sound Pro 3x, a 27 pound briefcase sized unit with a true spinning horn rotor.you can usually pick them up at the online music stores for 600-700 bucks.(no i'm not affiliated with Motion Sound or any music store !) i'm going to post a link that A-B's some of the Leslie sims out there, including the Pro3x

http://jimbobwan.com/guitar/leslie01.htm

to me, the Pro 3x came very close to the Badge/Don't Come Easy sound i'm looking for. i would appreciate any of your thoughts on some of the other devices out there in regards to this particular tone..especially the line 6 Roto pedal, the Boss RT-20, and the Leslie 37 and 3300 models

i don't mean to sound like a snob, but it's hard to explain the tone i describe unless you've played through an Actual Leslie

my head is spinning from this Quest !

I tried one out at L&M here in Canada to compare it with my Leslie 122.

Im sorry, but the Leslie lights up the whole room. Its a fuller, more dynamic sound.

The only advantage the MS had was the compact size. Leslies, as much as I love them are a

huge pain in the butt to move. My 150 pound chorus/tremolo pedal. Thank God its on casters or

id really be in trouble.
