BigKahune
Well, a plain top has plain graining - no figuring in the wood. A plus top has figuring in the wood - flamed (aka curly or tiger), quilted, birdseye, etc. The more figuring, the higher the grade and the more expensive the wood. Kimbabig
Plain as you can see here, the maple on the top is plain wood. Plus the wood on here is what is known as "Flamed Maple" It simply looks pretty, as far as I know it effects the tone of the guitar in any way. A lot of guys dig it, and a lot of guys dig plain tops. 69 Son
For some reason I'd take the plain over the plus? Please tell me the Epis don't have a photo-flame??
BigKahune
Yes, a lot people prefer the plain tops. Nothin wrong with that. I think Epi uses a thin wood veneer, some models the veneer is on a maple cap.
69 Son
Jim Rosenberg stated somewhere in the 4henry forum, that Epi never used photo-flames they use real veneer Ah, just poking fun. The Epi LP tops I've seen look very nice. I know Fender used to adorn some models with foto-flame though.
