Andy R Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Well, I Don't have to go back to work until Tuesday and I might see if I can go ahead and take vacation time for the rest of this week. I'm not ready to get rolling yet this year. Anyway I decided I would try to build my own mixing/edit desk. I hope it turns out looking half way decent but at the very least I should be able to build something that will hold my gear. I hoping to turn this: Into something like this: (Without the Rack mount slots for now) I will post some progress if anyone is interested??? Regards, Andy
dbreslauer Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 You better post progress! +1 looks awesome, can't wait to see what you come up with! Don
Andy R Posted January 4, 2011 Author Posted January 4, 2011 Well day 1 and I managed to get the top cut and routed. The top is wider at the back than it is at the front and it has an arch cut in the front and in the back so it is a mild U shape. So I had to figure out how to make an accurate arch and how to cut it cleanly so when I routed the round over it wouldn't be all over the place. Started out a bit rough but figured out how to do it. So here are pics from today not much to look at but it's a start. Tomorrow will be speaker pedestals, legs and cable troff... Tragedy! Tried cutting the arch with a jig saw and that wasn't working, went to router "free hand and that didn't work either. Tragedy View 2 Problem solved! Used a trick my Dad showed me. trim bent to arch shape for router guide screwed to the bottom of the desk top. Arches routed Corners rounded - Got a little wave that needs sanded out Edges Rounded with router Kinda hard to tell bet they are! Until tomorrow... Andy
Andre S Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Very cool! I would have cut relief cuts along the arc, and use a coping saw to cut it....but I've had very bad experiences with my old jigsaw.

Took about 4 or 5 passes but the arch has a very clean cut now.
RudeDog Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 That is a great project that just about anyone can do, some can do it better than others of courese but I built mine some time ago, not the best in the world, and I still have finished the rack mounting hardware, or wire management, typical forever project. Here is a picture, it holds up my Mixer, Laptop and Tascam 2488Neo DAW, plus a lot of miscellaneous junk!! Kind of hard to see the routing on the edges bottom, desk and top shelf.

I would like to see it.
RudeDog Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 That is a really sweet bass, I have been trying to get a buddy of mine to buy one of those, look and sound awesome.
Andy R Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Thought I did add the pic's, here they Cool man! Nice job!!!!
Andy R Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Well It's build day 3 and everything is pretty much just waiting for glue to dry. Sanding and paint and hopefully Assembly will happen tomorrow. I decided to fore go the speaker pedestals since The JBL LSR4328P monitors are huge and sitting them directly on the desktop will put the tweeters a little above ear level. Kinda bummed because the pedestals looked cool but that's how it goes. So here is where I'm at: Front Legs and Rear Legs/Cable Trough. I used Kreg screw joints and glue to attach everything. Kreg Screw holes filled with wood: Will sand them all flush tomorrow Couldn't resist at least getting the gear next to it ! Tomorrow I sand and Paint. Screw on the rear panel for the Modesty Panel/ Cable Trough and ASSEMBLE!!!!!!! Thanks for peeking. Andy
RudeDog Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Nice work so far, I like the shaping on the legs, and they look really strong, that was one area I was a little weak in mine.
Andy R Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 Nice work so far, I like the shaping on the legs, and they look really strong, that was one area I was a little weak in mine. Hey Thanks man. Yeah I was a bit paranoid about all my gear crashing to the floor so I made sure the legs were good and sturdy! The Studio monitors weigh a ton!I could have done this in about half the time if I didn't add all the arched pieces but I wanted to give it a shot. The cable trough is arched too. Can't wait until tomorrow to get it put together and painted. Doesn't look like much now but I think it is going to turn out nice. Andy
Andre S Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Very nice! I hope someday I can build something like that!
cabba2203 Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Very cool! I need some custom bookshelves made when you get done with that.
Andy R Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Well I'm finally finished!!! Never thought that building something this "simple" would be such a pain in the butt and take so long! So here's some pics and comments about what was happening. Used "Faux Granite" paint for the legs and rear cable trough: Decided to use a black "Faux Sandstone " for the Top but regretted it after I did. The paint didn't spray well and I couldn't get good wet overlaps so it ended up looking streaky.: SO... I really like the natural wood top better anyway and I left the black along the edges: So now for the final reveal. Nothing to obviously fancy but all the top and the cable trough have a arch in them for Style points! I was going to build all the fancy speaker raisers and stuff but then my speakers would have been to tall. Still might add one effects bay... Hope you guys like it. Side View: Of course the power strip I got for the trough is too long! Now with some stuff!!!! Hopefully tomorrow I can Actually record something! Continued on next post
Andy R Posted January 8, 2011 Author Posted January 8, 2011 Continued... And of course look what's on the screen! Well hopefully I can actually get something recorded tomorrow! Got some of the parts for my Les Paul Studio Project so i will be updating that post soon. Thanks for all the encouragement and compliments! Sincerely, Andy
