tepidy Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I use custom guage 10 - 52's, Nickle wound. By DR Playing Zep, AC/DC, Crue ect.
DoubleSixx Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Ernie Ball Power Slinky 11 ~ 48. I made the mistake in dropping back to 10 ~ 46 Regular Slinky the other day. I replaced with 11s two days later. I mostly play in Drop D tuning, with 10s so much tension is lost.
vmaster38 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 D'Addario XL Nickel Wound (.009 - .042) have served me well for over 25 years.
tazzboy Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Ernie Ball Super Slinky .009 I have been trying out the RPS Version and so far so good.
cvansickle Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Gibson Vintage Reissue 10s. Use them on all my Gibsons.
Aaresz Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Gibson Vintage Reissue 10s. Use them on all my Gibsons. +1
Fixr1984 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I was using D'Addario 10-46 for a while. My local store was completly out of stock on those I switched to DR 10-46 and seem to like those better.
vmaster38 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 DR huh? I've never tried them before. I'll have to give those a shot....
tonebias Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Been using ernie ball slinky 10-46 for over 20 years, tried them all, I like these... but this is only an opinion. I'm sure there are better strings but I change them often and you can get these in bulk pretty cheap. The ones I won't use are the coated ones, in fact I had a few pairs that I got somewhere and I just threw them away, tone suckers. What's the point if you can get ernie's so cheap anyway?
slimjimdom Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 VR 10s though the nanoweb Elixirs have worked out really well on my BFG. I'm sure afew of you guys are like me and set up your different guitars in different tunings. I play in standard and Eb - on the flat should I move up to 11's to compensate for the tension difference?

I have a LP Standard I was thinking about selling but now I'm actually thinking I may keep it and just keep it tuned to Eb so I don't have to monkey around changing tunings. reason being is even though I'm pretty sure what I explained above is correct, I'm wondering if just keeping a particular guitar in the same tuning wouldn't be better for it overall as opposed to changing it frequently (even if kept w/in 1/2 or a full step). anyone have thoughts on this?
RichCI Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I'll say it once more - WebStrings. I put them on all my guitars (LP, Strat, Tele, SG Jr, etc.). Nickel wrapped, great tone, cheap. I'll never pay high prices for strings again. Ever.
surfpup Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Been buying 10 pks of D'Addario XLs. ($2.99 a set that way). Standard 11 gauge nickel. I tune every guitar to Eb too. Also had good luck with Electro Harmonix strings. Anyone else tried those? I guess I need to try the VIntage Gibson set since many here rave about them.
HeadCase Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Vintage Reissue 10s - current fave. (standard tuning) Tried 11s, great feel but not so hot for bends. Too much work. Recently tried 9s - I'm thinking these might be the ones to stick with, nice & bendy. Might even try 8s but I don't think they are available as Vintage Reissue. D'addarios are O.K. too.
stymye Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 my strings tarnish fast in certain spots that I play alot in, I think it's because I've been eating alot of tomatos from our garden lately. what can I clean the strings with?none of my home made remedys seem to work. I was told not to get the gibson polish, what a good reccomendation. oh I use the daddario xls also, like surfpup I buy them in atleast the 3 pk. should I just try a higher nickel content string? because I practice 2-3 hrs every day

[/quote'] I asked the tech the same question about the strings and tensions between standard and Eb. He said he plays majority in Eb as well and that 11's in Eb feel like 10's in standard. I won't be able to say for sure until i get the guitar back. I can say though switching between my SG in E and the LP in Eb I can feel a clear difference there. So i'm having him set the LP to Eb and the SG is set to standard. But really I find it easier just to have the guitar setup for Eb since that's what I normally play in. If i want to play something standard throw a capo on. Chances are if it has to be in standard it's going to be mostly open chord shapes and theres not much need to move around the fretboard or else you could just play it in Eb and transpose everything 1 fret up, and barre your way through. Not everyone will agree with this approach. That's just how I do things.

Never put polish on them. Gibson Brite Wires ,10 guage. Love 'em. D'addario's are a close 2nd.
retrosurfer1959 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Most here are too young to have been playing in the 80's' date=' there used to be a string out there that was really inexpensive and great sounding. The string was in a black package and it was named "Heavy Metal Guitar Strings", I thought this was another gimic. In many ways it was but there was something about those strings, first they were light top and heavy bottom. The real deal was that these strings had a higher iron content, and if you did not take care of your guitar and wipe it down after you used it these strings would rust 2 to 3 times faster than normal strings. l[/quote'] I remember those, your right they used to rust bad a lot of the strings did at that time. I have tiny scars over all my fingertips from strings that would be rough from slight surface rust. grew up on the coast in CA. I play reissues 10's now on most of my guitars however on the SG and L6-s and all my acoustics I like the sound of 9's so I play Nano-Webs on most of those
Old Deadhead Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Gibson Humbuckers 10-46 on the Paul and Super Slinky Pinks on the other electrics. The Humbuckers do sound pretty mello. I like the nano webs on my acoustics also.
jim293 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Gibson Vintage Reissue 10s. Use them on all my Gibsons. That is all I ever buy.
elessar820 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 GHS Boomers. TNT (10-52) on my BFG and Ibanez and CL (9-46) on my Strats. Elixir 12-53 on my Martin and D'Addario 45-100's on my bass. I had the TNTs on my Strats, but the lighter strings feel better and I can use less spring tension on the trem.
