Let's Talk About Nuts.

I've noticed a few complaints about "plastic" nuts.

I only have a few Gibbys, one is a 1961 Melody Maker double cut twin pickup, that appears to have a plastic nut. It's been in my family for over 38 years, I'm sure it's original. It might not be plastic but doesn't "clank" like bone if ya whack it. Ahem....

My 1979 "The SG" nut seems to some kind of man made material as well. It's almost 30 years old and just fine.

My 2003 J45 Rosewood has "Tusk" I think. Man made, no?

When did Gibson use bone nuts?

My wifes 1933 Gibson Mandolin has an ebony nut.

Are you guys having problems with pre-mature wear on your nuts? (man, PLEASE don't spin this into 5 pages of......, sheeze..... you know) ....

I just REALLY want to know if Gibson is using a softer material, causing pre-mature wear, because I heard of Fender doing this with fret wire once.

Thanks.

I have the stock plastic nut on all four of my Gibsons. My Studio has about a billion and a half notes on it and I have no wear issues with it. The nuts are notorious for binding, though, and I use Big Bends to cure that.

The plastic nuts on most Gibson's Suck. They are to soft and the strings cut into them causing the pinging and binding and do nothing for tone.

All of my Lesters (and an sg & firebird) Have camel bone nuts. Its the first thing I do when I get another guitar. They never cause pinching, look cool and def. im prove the tone.
