1964 Texan

I have the chance to play an original 1964 Texan sunburst and maybe buy it! I'm in the Market for another acoustic and this is a nice guitar with a sunburst finish!

I've not been given a price yet! What's a decent price for one of these in good condition??

Regards and thanks!

I think you might find the guitar is on its way to a forum member ........... \:D/

Not now Marcus! He originally quoted me £1700 for the Texan, and said he would take my Lennon 65 re-issue Casino with a trade in value of £1475, which is reasonable in my eyes, so I offered £150 cash as well, which makes a total offer of £1625, which again I think is reasonable considering I would travel over 200 miles to pick the guitar up, thus saving him post and package, as well as the inconvenience. He comes back with a counter offer of Casino plus £300, because he forgot to factor in his costs! Now I reckon that makes a total cost of £1775, which is £75 higher than his original quote, and then I find it`s also on ebay at £1900 start bid, plus you have to pick it up!

I know where there is a great 62 for £1600, and that one doesn`t have the plastic bridge.

I suspect you are right in this instance El Capitan.

Steve.

If the seller is basing his price on a post here, and not on condition of the instrument and condition of the market for it, then I'd be careful. How much is the seller asking, anyway?

In any case, a better price may await one who is patient, informed, and is willing to negotiate fairly and amicably (especially if you find a motivated seller)! Good luck to all of you with that!

This guitar is now on eBay UK at a premium price from a dealer.

So dealers are using this Forum to value guitars.

Allegedly.

Wrong!!

I wrote the original post! Im not the dealer im the intersted switched on customer! I have also been a member here since 2007! Iam also the guitars new owner!!

I posted here with the intention of finding the value and the quality of these guitars!and I did just that!!

Since posting this thread I intially decided to NOT to move on the guitar... And then I played it, which forced a change of mind!

I didnt buy the guitar I swapped it with a LP from my collection.

Regards

Simon

I've still no idea what is a reasonable or high price for this guitar. The price in this link however!! Lolol

Ted Macarthy's book on Gibson/ Epiphone shows this guitar with a plastic bridge. Is that the original bridge??

The guitar in the GBase link looks like it has an oversized, replacement bridge.

Simon, they vary drastically in price depending mainly on condition, but also the year, with probably the most desirable ones being the natural top 1964 model as played by McCartney. I have to hand the 2011 edition of "Vintage guitar collector" and this is what they reckon (Price range based on excellent original condition), but please bear in mind these prices are not set in stone.

Epiphone FT-79 Texan.

1958-59--- $3100-3900.

1960-64--- $3000-3800.

1965 --- $2600-3400.

1966-67--- $2400-3200.

1968-70--- $2200-2900.

Pre 65 is obviously more desirable because that is the year Norlin took over Gibson, and a percieved drop in quality took place, although this happened later in the 60`s with thinner necks, changed headstock angle 17 degrees to 14, smaller pickguards, then screwed on pickguards etc etc.

Having said all that quite a few Texans (and other models) were built with plastic bridges (63-64 in the Texans case, making a wooden bridge 63-64 more desirable than a plastic bridged one). this bridge is deemed to be one of the worst ideas that Gibson ever came up with, and is generally not a desirable feature. The bridge is held on by four bolts, and has a tendency to split and warp over time, however with yours being in such fabulous original condition, and with the guitar sounding so good, I would leave well alone.

Hope this helps,

Steve.

Thanks Red,

You would be surprised how many marks and scuffs are on this guitar looking at those pics... The body, back of the neck and other areas have heavy checking in the finish...with dents, dinks etc etc... Im glad though! Its clearly been played which speaks volumes to me...

The natural colour seems more common... did they do these in any other colours??

As a rule, I believe they came either in Natural or with a "Shaded" top, like yours.

I have seen a custom order cherry red Texan for sale on eBay, though. Gibson could finish a guitar just about any way a customer wanted (and still will), so there could be other one-offs out there.
