mum
Hey guys, I've got a John Lennon J-160, and I am in the process of replacing all of the machine heads, as a couple have broken. I recently purchased the Gibson vintage nickel machine heads, though this was when i realized I bought the longer ones, and the shorts were originally installed on my acoustic. Will the long ones work fine? or do I need to exchange them for the shorter ones?
drathbun
I think your guitar came with the Vintage Kluson style Gotoh tuners. I don't know what the specs are of the Gibson replacements you have, but compare them with Kluson Style Gotoh Do the new ones fit? If so, how much higher do your strings sit up off the headstock? It seems to me if you have longer tuner shafts you will have a shallower break angle over the nut. The John Lennon has a 17 degree headstock angle and the strings need to match that angle.
