Sockeroo Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Hey everyone, New member, but not new to Gibson. I've recently picked up a white 2006 SG standard. Going to Mandolin Brothers here in New York soon for an upgrade. Swapping the green keys for Grovers, dropping two Burstbucker Pro's in and replacing the black pick guard for a red tortoise. Will post pics as soon as it's ready. Here's a mock up for now: John
NeoConMan Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Welcome aboard again! Sounds like you're on the right track. I've wondered how Mandolin Bros. was as a store, NYC should have some killer Gibson dealers, eh?
Sockeroo Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 Hey guys. I love Mandolin...the best. The shop is chock-full of vintage guitars, mandolins, banjos, et al. The staff is warm and informative (you can play for hours too), and the repair shop is stellar. All of my guitars run through there. They're known for their out-of-town customers on weekends. People drive in from all over the country. Check them out if you can.
NeoConMan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Seen the website, I was on the mailing list for awhile. Inquired about some guitar a couple years ago, don't remember what it was, so they mailed their flyers to me.
Sockeroo Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 Yeah, the site and ephemera are pretty weak. Doesn't do the shop justice. If you're ever in New York, head over.
rjay777 Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 ooooooh, red tortoise looks sweet on white eh. Nice choice.:)
GuitarJunkie Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Welcome aboard. About 20-plus years ago when i was a young punk, I bought a '30s Gibson lapsteel (with a non-original pick-up) for $185. Like most of their customers, I had the pleasure of dealing directly with Stan Jay (the owner). Over the next dozen years or so, I called maybe a total of 3 to 5 times with sometimes years passing between calls. Stan always remembered exactly who I was and treated me like I was someone who bought thousands of dollars worth of gear on a regular basis. It's still a dream of mine to drive down there someday. BTW, the lapsteel arrived with the pickup not working. They had me mail them the pickup and repaired it free of charge. There goes any profit they would have made on a $185 guitar. Maybe that's why Stan remembered me.
jenciv Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Oh my gosh, its beautiful! Thank you so much for the kind compliments and feedback on mine too. I haven't had too much time with work to allow for more upgrades on it (I know, excuses ; ) but I appreciate your info about the pickups. Welcome to the site ~ looking forward to seeing more of your pics and posts! JenCiv
Sockeroo Posted August 26, 2008 Author Posted August 26, 2008 Same here. I'm actually in the process of finding work, it's been a long summer of interviews. I've only recently resumed the recordings with my band (finally). Looking forward to playing the SG on the tracks.
Randy1 Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Very cool look with the white guitar, and red pick guard. As always the Burstbuckers will sound great.
