Which style SG do you like better: '61 SG or 2011 Standard?

I voted standard based on my 2010 standard but it has the 60's slim taper, batwing and Burstbuckers 1&3.

I really dig the larger headstock though. Frankly, I don't like the '57s pups as much or the yellowed inlays.

I don't get what's so great about a wider headstock, more neckdive is all I see. Also the statement that the 61 Reissue sounds and plays better than the Standard is highly debatable. Like I said earlier, I went specifically to get a 61 reissue and was more impressed with the Standard I got than the 61 reissues I played at the store.

I like the headstock because it looks better and with a decent strap neckdive is not really a problem.

It's just a matter of personal taste IMHO. Same thing with feel and sound. :)

(I especially like the neck on my 61, best neck of any guitar I've played so far)

I like all SG's but my fav is the '61 RI...unless we can count signature customs and that would be this one for me:

I have the Epi version of the Iommi sig, and it's hands down the best Epi SG i've ever played. The Gibson Iommi pickups WAIL!!

hey guys, first time forum...er?

well, to cut to it, i'm a proud newish owner a 2010 sg standard which i'd paid off over an entire year, now i did a ton of research and testing into all variants of the sg because i'm just a bit obsessed and i originally intended to get the 61 reissue. however having gone to several stores to have a feel of one i was not very impressed. there are a ton of differences between the '61 and the standard, and it was about 50/50 in guitar choice. basically the '61 has a deeper cutaway and the more tradition sg body, but it is heavier than MY standard, and i'd grabbed a bunch of 61's to look at. i also liked the looks and the playability of the standard, especially the neck comparison. however they're both trumped by the VOS sg standard reissue, which is actually a fantastic guitar and combines the best assests of both into one guitar, along with nice goodies like an aluminium tailpiece. also the sg/les paul cutsom is one that should be considered, i played a walnut one which was fantastic, although the middle pickup can get in the way a bit, but that's solved by lowering it i suppose. it's also close to the price of the vos reissue. best of all, both come with the vibrato!! now if you look hard, or even delve into the second hand market, you're bound to find one for good value!

I just picked up a new 2010 SG Std at GS. It's apparantly called an SG Std 60's. It has a Burstbucker 1 in the neck and a 3 in the bridge. The only difference I can see between it and the regular Std is it has coil taps. This I like because I think it adds to the versitility. On the down side, it has the uncovered zebra pickups and the cream parts don't see to go with the black batwing pickguard. Also, it's the only Gibson I've ever seen without the trim rings around the pickups. I picked up a set of rings that I'll install tomorrow to spruce it up. I'm also probably going to install a set of chrome covers on it soon. Back in the day I had an original '61 Les Paul (SG) that I swapped off for a '64 SG which I liked better than the '61. It had a slimmer neck profile and had a ballsier tone (IMO). Of all the guitars I've sold over my lifetime, I missed the '64 the most. This new one looks and plays like my old '64. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper. I also tried 2 different '61 RI's and still liked the 2010 better. So after that longwinded prelude, I vote for the 2010.

Both are great guitars. Comes down to personal preference and the most significant difference that makes the choice one way or the other for people is the neck - 60's slim taper or fat SG rounded.

If you're really on the fence, Guitar Center / Musicians Friend has an exclusive model that's kind of a mix of both. it has the large pickguard and longer neck joint, but a 60's slim taper neck. Also has BB3 bridge and 57 Classic neck with coil taps.

Slap some nickel covers on that new 60's SG and you're set. I'm on the fence on the BB 1 & 3...thinking I liked the '57s on my '61 RI just a little bit better. The BB Pros sound so sweet in a Paul, they ought to try those in an SG platform.
