tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Well? All you Jimmy Page fans must have something to say??? Retracted - I personally can’t stand the guy EDIT - I don’t particularly care for Jimmy Page, but I did stay up to see the passing of the torch for the 2012 olympics. What did you think? “Whole lotta love” was his song… I can't wait till the 2012 oympics, its something I love to watch every 4 years....
chengin Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Just saw it this morning...does he have cash flow problems or was he just yearning to play a stadium again or something, or maybe he figured there'd be lots of chinese groupie opportunities just like the good old days of the old Zep tours? Really can't understand why he needed to do it. Not too impressed..
geyser Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 hey guys, please leave Jimmy alone! He's God himself, he can do whatever he wants and he (and his Les Paul as well ) just shined yesterday, IMHO. Last, read the news to know as the story went here: http://www.tightbutloose.co.uk/main.html and you'll see, I guess, there's nothing to shame about it. Just my 2 cents, of course... Peace and ROCK! G.
LT ED Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 He was probably invited and being a nice guy didn,t want to decline, and as for cash flow he probabley has more in his socks than we will earn in a life time.
NeoConMan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Jimmy Page fans must have something to say??? I personally can’t stand the guy What did you think? I can't wait till the 2012 oympics' date=' its something I love to watch every 4 years....[/quote'] Heh, heh.... I think we're complete and total opposites here. I'm a huge Jimmy Page fan, but I personally can't stand the Olympics. Sort of a United Nations without blue helmets - what does it actually show for us all? At least the athletes will accomplish something, the UN has yet to do so in 60 years of trying.... From what I gather, Jimmy is involved as sort of an Ambassador to London since the games will be there in 2012. Trying to be a respectable chap now, and a little more money in the bank is always nice. Whatever.
tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 I don't think he was playing. may have been finger sync'ed. Course I don't think it would be easy to play in that physical position on the little stand while also representing your country, Blah, Blah...etc.... It was a cool ceremony though. The reason I don't like Page is personal, I'm not a Zep fan either. I did grow up during that time but just never got into them. Ya, Page was innovative and he has good taste in instruments. I just have some problems with his personal belief's. Nothing against people who dig Zep, just not my thing. Neo, my friend, the Olympics are all about world politics. We won this year (# of medals), but the Chi-coms really did try to pull some crap with the 10 year old gymnists and the fake fireworks in the opening ceremony. It's 'funny' how they won more Gold's??? It was also kinda cool to see the Georgian Volly Ball team beat the Russians. Wish I could eat like Michael Phelps!
MikeRom Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 IIt was also kinda cool to see the Georgian Volly Ball team beat the Russians. Wish I could eat like Michael Phelps! The Georgian players were Baziliians given quick citizenship in order to compete in the games.
Thundergod Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 I really dont care about any of thw above mentioned: Jimmy or the olympics... but at least Jimmy plays guitar very well... now the olympics... they dont have anything Im interested in.
NeoConMan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Ya' date=' Page was innovative and he has good taste in instruments. I just have some problems with his personal belief's. [/quote'] Personal beliefs? Page has always been pretty secretive about his personal life, gives few interviews and never mentions his family. He was treated to tabloid bullsh!t with his interest in Alistair Crowley and some of the Dark stuff in the early 70's. After that, he just let them believe whatever they wanted and cashed in on the publicity. I'm a Christian, and I don't even care. I'm sure I would have done the same. What else is there in his personal beliefs you find so distasteful? Neo' date=' my friend, the Olympics are all about world politics. [/quote']Thus, my UN remark. About as relevant and "important" at the end of the day. I really could not care less.
Aaresz Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Everything I've ever read about Jimmy Page makes him come off as a major jerk, and an egomaniac! I just strikes me as odd that of all the people in England they would want Jimmy Page to warmly welcoming the Olympics.
NeoConMan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Everything I've ever read about Jimmy Page makes him come off as a major jerk' date=' and an egomaniac! I just strikes me as odd that of all the people in England they would want Jimmy Page to warmly welcoming the Olympics. [/quote']As I have never met the guy, I can only express with hopeful optimism that my perception of him is accurate. I've always understood his desire to be a bit distant with the press, I would be too. When he does emerge for a rare interview, it's always with conditions layed down by him. Again, I understand. When he does actually appear and speak, he's always been easy-going if the interviewer doesn't get stupid. Okay. His appearances offstage are rare, like when he met Queen Elizabeth with Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Brian May in 2005. The Queen Mum asked Clapton "What do you do?" in an infamous example of cluelessness. All four of those guitarists are gentlemen in public, without fail. He has been gracious in every interview I've seen with him in the last 20 years. To think he wants to do things his way or not participate at all is not a character flaw in my opinion. With his money and talent, why should he put up with a bunch of sh!t? He's rarely active in the music world, occasionally tips his hat to the world to acknowledge his Guitar God status. His latest foray onto the world stage seems to be his idea to cultivate said status with a quick appearance and then vanish back into JimmyLand, wherever that may be. A little hokey in my opinion, but good for him. He doesn't owe me anything. I'm content with his musical legacy, and I understand his unwillingness to release any new music that would never measure up to it. If he looks foolish in 2012, he'll have to cope with that himself.
tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 I'm a Christian' date=' and I don't even care. I'm sure I would have done the same.[/quote'] Not getting you here man, please don't think I'm questioning your faith. I know maybe a little something about Christianity. I don't want to argue with you about your faith, I once shared it until I lost my wife last year and now I'm wandering. I also know a little about Page, but I'm not here to Bash him, I just stated that I don't care for him. Look Neo, I know your sore at me because of the Guitar Center stuff (Please nobody else turn this into a GC rant thing)... but come on, there is more than enough info on Page and his 'personal interests' to sour my stomach, he really didn't make it a big secret way back when, he does now, don't know what he's into now. I don't want to fight about it, if you like him, cool, I like some of his work too, just not into what he's is/was into. I don't want to have a dispute over it... I really could not care less. I do care about world politics... If you don't care for it, that's cool... Just as I don't care for Page.
HeadCase Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 OMG..... Next we're gonna hear.. "Santa Clause is an A-hole.. drunk.. magic...I never really liked him either...."
tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 Next we're gonna hear.. "Santa Clause is an A-hole.. drunk.. magic...I never really liked him either...." I like Santa... What are you saying here anyway?
Aaresz Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 OMG.....Next we're gonna hear.. "Santa Clause is an A-hole.. drunk.. magic...I never really liked him either...." I've not read anything bad about Santa Claus....................... But as I doubt I'll ever meet him either I could only make judgements on what I've read in the past. Please don't misunderstand my earlier comments, I respect Jimmy Page immensely, and he certainly has a right to act as he pleases. I'm simply stating that he does not have the reputation of being a warm, and welcoming person - not that there is anything wrong with that. For that reason he seemed an odd choice.
flyingarmadillo Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 I don't think he was playing. may have been finger sync'ed. Course I don't think it would be easy to play in that physical position on the little stand while also representing your country' date=' Blah, Blah...etc.... It was a cool ceremony though. [/quote'] That was my impression too, his fingers (on either hand) weren't even close to the notes that were coming out.
NeoConMan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Well, TB, your opening gambit was that you "can't stand" Page. I avoid using such strong condemnation of any guitarists, certainly not in the first sentence of a thread. Pete Townsend? Sorry, I just never got into the Who but I recognize his impact on rock, including Marshall amps. Keith Richards? He's a hack in my opinion, he's all about the groove/attitude. Took me years to see why the Stones were so big. Kurt Cobain was a whiney, pathetic, self-loathing, drug-addled piece of sh!t, miserable from his first breath to his last. His records sold millions and I just don't understand why. There are others, but those are my top three. I would resort to sprinkling such observations into a conversation at some point if I felt the need, but I would never open a thread saying from the start that I couldn't stand them. I'll give their fans a little more credit than that. I never saw Page live, most people who did said the show was a snooze-fest if the music didn't move you. Their live sound was terribly inadequate to replicate their records, I can see that on the dvd's I have. Still, I'm a fan. Personal taste is funny that way. Page did some stupid sh!t in the seventies. He had the money and the freedom to do what many others would have. He also suffered from chronic sinus infections (I lost my sense of smell and some hearing due to them) and was heavily medicated for it while traveling. His recreational drug use was legendary, their shows suffered, and his doctor-shopping from town to town yielded poor results. Later he had back trouble. Pain fxcks you up. Prescriptions can replace one problem with another. Drugs can make it all a mess. Page got out of the music biz, married and had a family. He has a successful daughter doing her own thing in photography. I never tried to sugar coat anything any "rock stars" did whether I liked 'em or not. I like the music, so I contribute my money to his bank account. Speaking of musician's bank accounts... I refuse to purchase (new anyway) any music from a number of musicians, because of their political views and their incessant yammering on subjects they know nothing about. Many of these bands I like, but buying new cd's or concert tickets empowers them to keep up the stupidity. Same goes for Hollywood morons and movie tickets. I liked alot of John Mellencamp's old stuff. Really liked Foo Fighters. Bonnie Raitt. Bruce Springsteen was okay. John Fogerty. Linda Ronstadt. When they start doing the Dixie Chicks bullsh!t and commiting seditious acts against my nation, I slam my wallet shut. You mention world politics. There's a couple different ways to assign a value to that term. I can assure you, I'm better informed and much more interested than 98% of the people you meet on the street or in a guitar forum. When I speak of world politics, it's observing what's going on out there that can affect me and my family today and tomorrow. Now, the Obama view is that we should listen to what the world says about US and steer our nation to suit them. Big difference. I'm far from politically apathetic, and my comparison of the Olympics to the United Nations is valid on many levels. Both subscribe to and survive on a One World view of things, that sacrificing a little for the greater good is the right thing to do. Funny how the United States sacrifices more in military might, personal losses and cold hard currency than all nations combined, yet WE need to do things the way some dipsh!t from Ghana in a suit at the NYC UN headquarters believes is Right & Just. I'll stop here. I can see this devolving the way it normally does. Lucid and fully formed thoughts are met with vague and circular response. Got nothing against you TB, you have a killer Les Paul, and I'm sorry for the loss of your wife. Never been in those shoes, closest I got was a blowout divorce. Be cool.
HeadCase Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Just seems strange to hear Gibson players not liking Jimmy Page (his music), or caring about his personality & beliefs. Nothing wrong with that.... we're all entitled to our own opinions. Actually, I missed the Olympic thing. From what I've heard about it I don't think I missed much. China... land of fake guitars and fake playing.
tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 You're alright Neo... You've got a very good point about me starting the thread off saying I can't stand the guy, I do regret saying it. I would officially like to apologize to you and all the Page fans out there. I was up late and had some adult beverages and I made a mistake, no excuse, I messed up. I would like to change what I said to “I don’t particularly care for Jimmy Page” and retract my previous statement. My statement change does reflect my honest opinion of the man. I don’t hate him and I wish him no harm. Did I back paddle well enough or do I need to try harder, maybe I should go out and buy a couple of Zep albums. I use to have one BTW. I share some of your political views Neo, some of which you take a more extreme approach and probably some that you don’t. I’ve kind of dropped out of it a little bit in the last year due to obvious reasons, but the Olympics are near and dear to me. I do understand your point(s) as they are well made, but there’ve been times when the Olympics make politics, strong gestures, and flat out make history. The most interesting thing I would point to is when Jesse Owens took 3 gold’s in the 36 Olympics. Hitler was such an *** and it backfired, using the Olympics to show the world that the Germans were superior. It may or may not have changed world view but it did happen, we can’t know what would’ve happened if the Germans had swept it. I always like to see these things live when I can, that way I can view it and make my own opinion without anyone else, like CNN, coloring it or changing the intent. Cool, so did you see the performance? Was he playing to a track or was it live? BTW, his guitar bore a striking resemblance to mine huh? HeadCase: I reserve the right to like, think and say what I wish and if I make a mistake, I will fess up. Now why did you have to go and bring my man Santa into this? I met him a couple times at a mall somewhere and he was very cool! I think I have a picture somewhere…
FreedomStain Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 ...and I thought the hand syncing (or possibly the lip syncing) would be the main issue. Never thought Santa would be dragged into this conspiricy.
Aaresz Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 This thread has turned very strange. All because Jimmy Page pulled a Milli Vanilli? If the Easter Bunny shows up I'm out of here.
FreedomStain Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 It might be for the best. I've always suspected Santa to be the mastermind behind Jim Morrison's mysterious death... We could be on to something huge.
tonebias Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 This thread has turned very strange. Why, what on earth could you be talking about, So far we've covered: Olympics Politics Jimmy Page Led Zepplin Les Paul Guitars Milli Vanilli Jim Morrison's death Religion A statement and retraction Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny... Did we miss something? I think I even mentioned Guitar Center in there somewhere....
Bluemoon Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Ok, to bring it back a little more on topic...which Les Paul was he playing?
