Tim Plains
Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but I have been dying to get one of these for well over three years! Talk about major GAS relief!! I had a chance to buy one new in December 2007 but I had just bought a HC 2007 SG Standard and they, the store, wanted my one-month old SG plus $900 for it. No thanks!! A few have popped up for sale locally but the sellers were always wanting too much money for this "rare" guitar or I just didn't like the way the particular guitar felt. This one's a little neck heavy - Grovers, what do you expect? - but I can live with it. It doesn't neck dive on a strap, thankfully. 6 lb 10 oz on my digital scale. That's lighter than my 7 lb 1 oz SG VOS! I already gave it a Faber ABR-1 & '59 tailpiece. These two Faber parts are over 3 oz lighter than the stock ones. I don't think it's not noticeable on the guitar but the stock tailpiece felt like a brick in comparison when they were both in my hands. The neck feels slimmer than your typical rounded profile but it's very comfortable. I like the way the guitar sounds now but I'll probably end up tickering with it and replacing the pickups/pots/caps. I have Burstbuckers & '57 Classics lying around from my other guitars and may eventually try them here...or try some new aftermarkets.
69 Son
Nice, very cool, ebony board with Grovers too. I dig how silverburst ages it gets very warm.

renin74
congrats r9, that looks stunning. got one from the 2007 run, like the silverburst better on the sg than the les paul for some reason. I have kept mine stock so far..
sneakerpimp
that is a beauty... congrats!!! yeah, i know all about the waiting game--i opted to wait 3 years for my prized 2006 Gothic II EMG to drop to $400 below retail, and it's rare as well, being a Musicians Friend special. not as nice as a Standard, but it's my dream guitar: an out of the box SG made for metal. Guest BentonC
Congrats! I think the Burstbuckers would rock in that guitar!
surfpup
Looks great. I'm surprised they didn't go with a black switch tip. That would be the crowning touch. How do you like the Faber ABR-1? I'm fixing to drop their '59 tailpiece onto a LP and wondering whether to do the easy studs for the ABR-1 or the ones that require tapping into the wood and supposedly have more sustain. Jeff-7
Looks great R9! You ever tried BKP's? Think you could find something right up your alley with them and they are top notch.
Tim Plains
Cheers guys. Jeff, never tried BKPs. Btw, I love your white SG!! GAS, GAS, GAS!! Any pictures? surf, the white tip makes the guitar. Besides, I think the black plastic tips ruin the tone. I'm sure that kit does improve sustain but I didn't want to go through the hassle. I just bought their drop on ABRN bridge for this and my Traditional. Both guitars also have their '59 tailpiece but I mainly bought the bridges for looks. I don't like Nashvilles because they're too bulky and their added width doesn't allow you to lower the tailpiece much. With these ABRs, the tailpieces on both guitars are nearly slammed. I don't know if the Faber parts made any improvement here because I brought the SG home, immediately replaced the strings and replaced the two parts. On the Traditional, I did notice that the guitar is much more responsive now with the Faber parts. It also does sound a little different but I can't explain how (and no, it's not all in my head...LOL). They just had a 20% off sale for the holidays. I'm guessing you missed it? surfpup
They just had a 20% off sale for the holidays. I'm guessing you missed it? Actually, no, Tim, I did not miss out. I did, however, place my order for a '59 tailpiece without being aware of the sale. Notably, Larry was kind enough to refund to my PayPal account the 20% I was entitled to had I been aware of the sale and entered the coupon code at checkout (even though I had no idea and he could have easily kept the full purchase price). I thought this was a pretty nice gesture, and it has certainly earned my future business. I'm not so much interested in the ABR for the looks as the potential tone improvements - especially due to the lightweight aluminum (and perhaps the direct to body mounting). I've been holding off on installing the '59 tailpiece until I have time to record some sound samples to sort of document/quantify the tonal differences.
