(Another?) guitar ID query

4 Strings

Recommended Posts

I've been offered this guitar but it looks a little suspicious to me. That bridge angle, not seen one at such an angle, and are those the right pups? The whammy looks a little odd too. Could anyone help me before I take the plunge? Is it a Gibson? If so, anyone know what model? I'm not too fussed if the pups are replacements (or just lost their cover) but I can't get passed that bridge.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks

That does NOT look like a Gibson to me, there are just so many things wrong with it. In the late sixties through the seventies there were a TON of ES copies, mostly from Japan of course.

Better AND detailed pictures, serial number, etc, would help, but in my opinion I've already seen enough.

Not with that headstock (I can tell even with an image of this resolution), and not with that almost certainly floating, wooden bridge. Looks like a cross between a 330 and a Mosrite.

Interesting....

Is the bridge floating or fixed?

Looks like P90's

Could be a Gibson 330

Thanks everyone, I think I've heard enough, looks like I'll be giving it a miss. Its in an auction of antiques and collectables in the UK. I have bought a wonderful Fender Precision from the same place about a year ago, perfect condition, 1976 with loads of history in the case. Thought I might have spotted another bargain but something just wasn't right.

Thanks again.

That is one of the Matsumoku 335 clones that were produced in Japan from 1970 - 1976(estimated).

The closest relative to Gibson are the Epiphones that Gibson had produced called the EA-250, the EA-255(with a Casino label but not the right 60s body shape), Riviera(again not the same 60s body shape).

Bolt on neck and some are very unstable. Some are not.

Steer Clear. If not, pay no more than $300.
