tartanbeastie
I'm thinking that before the year is out, yes i know its only just started, that I may consider a new amp. I currently have a fender blues junior tube amp. I'm considering going for a half stack again and spotted this http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/B-52-LS100-and-LS412A-Half-Stack?sku=482088 My other thought was, would I be better off just buying an extension cab and running the junior through it? milod
Okay, here's from an "older" guy... I don't know that particular amp. If it has a speaker-out jack, and you have it properly matched to amp output, I don't know why it wouldn't work for a lotta stuff to add an external cab, although it likely will give a bit different sound. I'm not sure about a direct tie into a bigger powered speaker. Again, you'll have a different sound. Or... for less cash than the stack, assuming you're happy with the Jr. whichever model you have, get a small PA. It'd cost less, a cupla hundred watts should reproduce the sound you already like for less cash than a bigger amp you may or may not care for in terms of tone in a bigger venue. That way the Jr. still functions behind you as a monitor and yet you can blast away out front. Or... Are you playing with the little amp on the floor? Raise it to chest level and you'd be surprised what a diff than can make. All depends on "what do you want more power for." m
tartanbeastie
Its not so much a need for bigger or louder, I think its more a case of boys and toys. And.. stacks do look fantastic..lol I tend to have my amp sitting on the floor, hardwood floors. I have considered P.A's also which i guess is the more practical of things because the wife can run her mandolin or guitars through it too
milod
Tartan... If you 'n' the missus like pickin' together, absolutely the PA. Not that I don't understand about more toys otherwise too... All kidding aside... I've done the amps thing up to the point where even when I was in my 30s it stopped being fun. Then at one point (30 years ago) I dumped my old tube PA that had some pretty horrid speakers by today's standards but wasn't too bad back then. That was a bigger error than I ever imagined. So I just got a very inexpensive one that will work. I'd looked at some of the same variables as you probably have been doing. It makes sense. I have 2 totally different amps for different sorts of gigs, but the PA would handle many all alone; with one or the other amps otherwise. If my wife were pickin' with me and we were doing duets or sorta fronting a band? No question, PA. Especially since you've got a darned nice amp. Then... look at an amp stand for the Junior; mikes for it; figure how you're gonna mike or do an A-E setup for you/your wife's guitar/mandolin and.... Still plenty of stuff to play with. Not that I ever, ever would have even though of doing such stuff. <blush from fibbing> m

saturn
I'm not sure about that madel B52. I just got rid of my B52 AT212. It was a great amp, but I had to make room. For the money B52s are hard to beat IMO. Here's my old B52 next to my new Carvin.
