sundayschild Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Peering into the back of my 2008 studio, I saw the much debated PCB. I wanted to switch out the 498T. The Gibson wiring diagrams indicate 4 wires from this pickup, but looking in the guitar, I only see 2 wires - a green wire(covered with plastic insulation) and a black wire (a little thicker, cloth covered - sorry i was not able to attch a pic), plugged one each into the PCB via some plastic connector. Anyone replace a pickup with a PCB who can shed some light about this wiring set up? Also has anyone done a coil split with a push-pull pot with the PCB? - it seems like it would be challenging.

I've been away from Gibsons for awhile. What is a PCB. I have a 09 LP Studio Deluxe. It has a 498T in the neck position and a Burstbucker Pro at the bridge. Both has push/pulls for split coils. Just curious. Thanks, Vince
strat-o-steve Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 PCB is a circuit board in the control cavity of many newer Gibsons. I think it would be far easier to just rewire the whole guitar than to try to mess with the circuit board. It would be easy to destroy the board when poking around in there with a soldering iron! Also, the pots are part of the board too, and wouldn't you want real pots? My 2009 has the circuit board, and I'll be leaving it alone as long as it keeps working.
Searcy Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Actually it's pretty simple to replace the pickups with the PCB. All you have to do is unplug the pickup from the board, cut the plug off the old pickup, solder it to the new pickup and plug it back in. My SG has the printed circuit board. Not tricky at all.

AlanH Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I suspect that the stock 490/498 combo may be 2-conductor wire versions rather than 4-conductor on the aftermarket pups. Thankfully I've never had a guitar with a PCB so I don't know for sure but it seems that the complete re-wire suggestion is the best option.

Thanks - you're corret, I decided to probe deeper into the white tubing and only saw two wires - a black wrapped in a braided wire and a separate green wire.
