Camera or device for recording acoustic audio and video?

I'm sick and tired of dealing with my ailing computer. Every time I turn on the webcam (Logitech; it's a good one), the computer fan starts screaming and drowning out whatever I'm recording. So I've decided to buy a camera for this purpose but it needs to be easy to upload to the 'puter, good sound/video, and reasonably priced. I have no idea where to start but thought you guys might know a few models to check out?

I've not used it, but I've heard people say some good things about this little unit. I would do your homework on it before making any purchase, but if you want good video quality AND great audio quality, I would look at something like this.

It's got two condenser mics built into the unit, and if they work anything like the condenser mics built into my Zoom R16, I think you'll be really pleased with the quality, especially compared to what you were using.

Personally, I can't stand the sound of guitars recorded with webcam mics or the mics built into a computer, so something like this would appeal to me a great deal.

Come to think of it...people have probably demo'ed this thing on youtube. That would be great place to check out the audio/video quality.

Seems like a good example right here...

Looks like they also have a HD version of that Zoom Q3, priced at $329.00 here in Calgary. They're referring to it as 'a musicians recorder' because the audio quality is actually higher than the video quality, from what I'm reading. I'm seriously considering this one. That's fine as long as you're not expecting too much [biggrin]

When I bought my Zoom, the salesperson helping me actually persuaded me from buying an additional condenser mic until I at least got the Zoom home and tried the built-in mics. I was skeptical, but very much pleasantly surprised with the quality.

Of course additional external mics are good to have, but if you're playing a lot of acoustic stuff and you're by yourself most of the time, these built-in mics may very well be all you could ever need.

I can't know for sure, but the Q3 may very well have the same mics in it that my R16 does - or at least equal in quality, if different. The link below is to a track I goofed around with a while back after first getting my stuff. The link is to Dropbox, which is a free file sharing site. You'll be able to listen to the recording without downloading. Both guitar tracks were recorded with the onboard mics. I simply had the R16 within a few feet of the amplifier for the electric track, and had the R16 right in front of me at waist height for the acoustic track. The drums were a direct line in from an effects box - no mic's there.

That sounded great. It was the intrumental of "wooded Ships" C,S,N&Y wasn,t it?

If it was, I unintentionally copied it. I thought I simply threw some chords together! The lead was improvised, and I also forgot that I did a little bass track on there too. The bass guitar was a direct line into the Zoom, via the effects box.

How soon is it expected to arrive, OWF? Yeah, please let me know what you think. I might pick one up on Monday.

Don't sell yourself short, Karen! Can't wait to see a clip! I found that in watching some video of myself and some of the bluegrass band, you can really learn a lot! I mean, what you think you sound like is NOT what you'll see on video. It will allow you to see what you can improve on. Whether it be vocals or your guitar playing, or the way you present yourself in a performance. Video can be a very valuable tool! Just ask Wiley as he is starting to venture out in the "performing guitarist" scene!

Hey Wiley! How's that ZoomQ3hd working out for ya? It's really making a splash on this side of the country. Any reviews for us? How 'bout you Karen? You made the leap yet?

I still haven't picked mine up yet  I will probably get in to L&McQ on the weekend as I have to return a Y cable too (it doesn't work). Wily, what about you? Any update?

I just got a Q3HD this week. Only had enough time to get it set up and try out a quick test video using its built in mics. Sound was actually very good for those little mics. I think the trick for us guitar players/singers is to get the recorder up around face height (instead of down on a low table) because placed low it made the guitar loud and vocal quieter. The trick will be finding the sweet spot where guitar and voice are about even loudness.

Or as Wily is suggesting ...get a mixer and mics and go with "line in" out of the mixer.

It is a sweet little device.... now I think I might just sell my H2 which I barely used. Anyone interested?
