onewilyfool Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Well.......This was my first "weekend" gig at the cafe. During the week, the owner asked me to come in play on Saturday, when it was real busy. Apparently, there is a huge surge of moms who drop off their kids at Karate class next door on Saturday Mornings.....lol....I started playing at 9:00 and was playing great and getting a lot of "thanks" from the customers, when just after 9:30 the crowds started coming.....lol.....Crowds are OK for me, but the chatter, and steaming for the capachinos, became such a din, that by the time I left, I could hardly hear myself play, and barely hear myself sing. LOL NOT that that is a bad thing.....laughing. I learned that there is a limit to acoustic playing and singing proportional to the crowd. I was definitely on the verge of needing my amp and a mic. I don't think I or the owner want that. So I will probably just play again on the weekdays where the sound is a little more manageable. These are all valuable lessons, don't get me wrong, I learned to stop playing when the steamer was booming, and to start over if need be, and today I re-played the same stanza if I made some big mistakes, kept the pace of the songs steady and relaxed....again, just another out of the home practice session. My compensation today was a donut and a coffee.....lol.......all in all....not a bad learning day......
larryp58 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 You're coming along nicely, Wiley! Funny, the small lessons learned! (and doing it is the only way!) An amp and a mic isn't a bad thing. It can really enhance your sound and you don't have to wear yourself out trying to "overpower" the audience. It can really save your voice. I would think, however, that the audience would be more respectful of you, while you're trying to perform, to hold the noise and chatter down to a minimum. (see the video I posted on GG's "Fire and Rain" thread) But I understand completely, been there and done it! Keep on keepin' on!
MR GIBS Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Mate, you did the hardest thing I think,,, I HATE do this although I can - playing & singing unplugged in a crovded saloon... This is a hero's act! A big bravo for the "cafe gig #4" !!!
