Martin HD28V vs my Legend J-45

Hello all,

Just a note to say that I sold my Martin HD28V. After I just purchased my Gibson J-45 Legend I really saw no reason to keep the HD28V, a great guitar in its own right. The fact is I LOVE the J-45 Legend and on those basis the HD28V would not be getting much action. I just hate keeping guitars around if they will not be used. This post is not intended in any way to diminish how good the HD28V was as compared to the Legend. But for my style of playing and sound preference the choice was clear. The Legend to me has so much more character and tone, where the HD28V was much more subdued and mid sounding. I would also say that as an all rounder the HD28V was better in that respect, I could see wider applications being possible with the HD28V. Then again, I have an unreal Seagull S6 Original that would fit that bill as well. In any case my friends, be well........Just a few observations.

Cheers,

Francesco

Welcome to the light .. :-)

No, only kidding, i acutally quite like the HD28v but found it be too much of a Cannon, just overpowering. Having said that it is also a rosewood guitar opposed to the J-45 which is mahogany.

My favourite Martin has always been the HD-35, i thought it was a great strummer and picker, and surprisingly quite well balanced.

I can always find an excuse to keep 2 guitars that are different- one Martin rosewood, the other Gibson mahogany. They cover different ground.

But, when the money runs out and I am down to my last guitar it will be a J-45 or variant.

Hey Wiley -

Bet your not playing your Sovereign much since getting your '53 CF-100. B)

I have a 1999 Martin HD-28V and I bought a 2007 J-45 True Vintage. I can understand you wanting to get rid of a guitar because you don't play it, that is why I sold a really great Seagull S-6. Regarding the Martin and Gibson though, like one fellow replied, the two guitars are different, one rosewood and one mahogany. I love them both and because the scale is different I have the best of both worlds. I would have a hard time selling the Martin even though I love the J-45 which acutally gets a little bit more playing time than the Martin. But the Martin is the one I travel with since I bought a Calton case (used to be the Seagull). Have fun with your J-45 and I hope you don't get a bad case of seller's remorse 'cause as you well know, you got rid of a really great guitar. I happens...

Hello,

Yes the HD28V is a really great guitar, and the one I had was no exception. However, the J-45 Legend I have is really outstanding and will get all the play time in the world where the Martin would have stayed in the case. The difference in tone and feel of the Legend is just on another level and really suites my style much more. As a gentleman on this forum eluded to earlier, I am not a collector. I like to think that whoever gets my old HD28V will cherish it forever for the right reasons. All the best!

Cheers,

I also got rid of several guitars after I purchased a gibson J-45 TV. I have found that too many guitars leads to constant comparison and less playing. As a former Martin guy I agree that they are simply great guitars. However, for my style and preference of neck I just simply prefer the Gibsons.

I guess my problem is I never met a guitar I didn't like. All of your points, everyone's, are very very sound. Enjoy your Gibson. I really enjoy my 2007 TV!
