Hartsner Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Hi! I've just bought an Epiphone Coronet Silverfox 1969. The bridge is replaced with a Tonepros AVT-II wrap around nickel-finish bridge, but I'm planning to replace it with a Gibson original wraparound bridge. The original p-90 cover is in nickel-finish but the maestro vibrola is in chrome-finish. Is this common on this models? Mixed chrome and nickel parts? And what kind of finish should i buy for the wraparound bridge? Chrome or nickel? The knobs isn't original either, does anyone know where i can find original knobs? Thanks! / Gabriel
RobinTheHood Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I know that at least until 1966 everything was nickel. Not sure about the 1969 model, but it seems unlikely that they would combine chrome and nickel hardware. I'm no expert, but the tailpiece on yours looks to be in much better condition than the rest of the hardware. Its probably been replaced or re-chromed. As far as the new bridge, nickel is historically correct. But if you want contiuity, you may want to go with chrome and replace the pickup cover as well...unless you dont mind the mixed parts or are planning to get a nickel tailpiece.
Whitmore Willy Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Gabriel, Welcome to the forum....Nice guitar! Here is a link to Vintage Guitar Info Website: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/epiphon2.html If you scroll down to the coronet section you can click on another link that has more information: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/coronet.html According to the link the parts were changed from nickel to chrome in 1966....I have no idea how accurate it is. Willy
RobinTheHood Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Gah....The '66 catalouge is the most current I have found. They were listed as nickel in 1966, so I assumed (stupid me) that they stayed nickel until 1969. Then again, I dont know how much I trust that site to be 100% accurate. The pickup cover and bridge on his '69 are both nickel, so... http://www.vintagegu.../epiphone66.php On this page http://home.provide....n2.html#coronet he claims that the P-90 covers only were changed to chrome in 1963 . And no mention of chrome parts being used in 1966. And the Epi '66 catalouge says otherwise as well.
Whitmore Willy Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 RTH, You may be right....As I said, I have no idea how accurate the linked site is. (not being a wise guy) Willy
RobinTheHood Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 The Coronet was reissued in the 1990's for a brief period. Maybe the vibrato came from one of them. It doesnt look nearly as old as the rest of the hardware from what I can tell form the pic.
Hartsner Posted January 30, 2011 Author Posted January 30, 2011 Thanks for the answers. The bridge on the picture is an tonepro non-original bridge. I do think the maestro vibrola is original, if you look at these pictures: http://www.pinrepair.com/vgi/epiphone/65_coronet-silverfox_b3.jpg http://www.pinrepair.com/vgi/epiphone/65_coronet-silverfox_b7.jpg it looks like the vibrato and the pickup-cover is in different finishes. The maestro is more blue than the p90. Maybe, the vibrato came from another year when they made my guitar, because it was the last year in production? They "took what they had", although it really looks like it's original. But, is the wrap around bridge chrome or nickel original? On my 1966 epiphone Olympic, the hardware is all chrome.
RobinTheHood Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 On my 1966 epiphone Olympic, the hardware is all chrome. Hmmm...the '66 EPi catalouge says the Olympic had nickel hardware as well. All of the electrics are listed as nickel. At this point I just dont know.
amx05462 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 that piskup cover is most likely nickel and can be fuffed right up. nickel is very hard .
