sportrider24 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hello, I was wondering if anyone could answer this question for me. I just bought a used Gibson SG faded and underneath the normal serial number and made in the USA branding, there is a second number that appears to have been put in by hand. It reads - XXX-XXXXXX. Is this a factory second serial# ? (can post pics if needed). Thanks, Sport
sportrider24 Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Sorry, I took the photo down. I don't want to possibly post someones SS# online.
L5Larry Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 No, this is not a factory applied number, and Gibson no longer sells "seconds". This looks to be a personal ID number from a previous owner, and also looks to be in a "Social Security Number" format. Local police departments used to (maybe still do) tell you to engrave your SS#, or driver's license number on your valuable items for ID purposes in case of theft. I have engraved personal ID numbers on guitars, but put it in the pickup cavity, not scrawled on the headstock.
sportrider24 Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 WOW!! Well, I purchased this guitar from Guitar Center in Pheonix, Arizona. I found it on their online used section and purchased it over the phone. I asked many questions before buying it. One was "is there anything unusual about the guitar I need to know about?" I think they should have told me this was there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dis-satisfied with the guitar. I just think it was wrong of them to not disclose this. Thanks for that info.
