Hey guys!

Thats my 2009 Gibson SG Special Faded. I changed the pickups into a Seymour Duncan Sh-4 Jeff Beck in the bridge position and a SH-2 Jazz Model. The machine heads are Sperzels and I used a piece polycarbonate for the cover at the back. I also changed the truss rod cover, the knobs and I use Schaller security locks.

Nice! hows the sound?

The sound is great! I was not satisfied with the 490 T, which has a nice vintage sound, but for me it sounds to dry...I wanted to have a dirty SG sound with lots of balls like airbourne or ac/dc. The two alnico 5 pickups are exactly what I want and the SH-2 Jazz has a beautiful clean sound.

The SG is not more neck heavy than it was with the original tuners. I think the Sperzels are even lighter than the Schaller ones, but I`m not sure...I got the idea of the Sperzels from the guitar of Tony Iommi, they do their job really well... By the way thanks for the replies! :-)

I don't get it [cursing] you place SD J&JB humbuckers that give a lot off mids and treble thin sound in an SG??

You won't get an AC/DC sound with that configuration my friend.

The SG has a thin body and pumps up a lot of middle en treble by its self icm with the SD humbuckers, you can scream the birds dead of your roof but the deepnes is gone.

I'm sorry but i think you made the wrong choice ](*,)

Well, maybe this is not exactly the sound of AC/DC, it's the sound of the devil [thumbup] ! I just wanted to have more output than the 490T/R without having a heavy metal axe with ceramic humbuckers. I think this hot rodded humbucker set could be a solution.

There isn't such an enormous difference between the Gibson 498T and the JB: They're both alnico 5 with upper midrange frequencies, singing highs, both for heavy rock.

I know, this combination is often used in a les paul, but it all began with seymours customised telegib which is also not as thick as a les paul. These were my thoughts, when I got the idea of replacing the pickups.

Do you know the ESP Viper-II OW Distressed or the ESP Custom Shop Bruce Kulick Signature? They've got the same bridge pickup and they're solid mahogany SGs as well...

I put an SD Jazz in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the bridge on mine. Made a huge difference over the stock PUPS. Good & meaty from the neck and screamin from the bridge.

nice. i prefer more subtle mods but you've made it your own and that's what matters.

did you make that back cover? nice touch there.

Thank you,

I made it together with my father out of a piece polycarbonat. It is more robust than plexiglas...

i know this topic is kinda old, but i'm pretty sure the Gibson SG Faded comes with 490T in the bridge, not the 498T. i was told the 490T's have alnico 2 magnets and not V's. Anyway i'm hoping the Seymour Duncan JB makes a significant difference, because i just bought the same pickup for my 2001 Gibson SG Faded :D

I think his point was that people don't frown on SGs fitted with the 498T (such as the SG Standard), yet the 498T is not too dissimilar to the JB in terms of magnets and 'hotness'.

Your fretboard is looking a little dry (3rd pic).

hey guys I have a sg special (not the faded model) and i've also replaced the 490T with the 498T in the bridge position.Great sound, awesome clarity and it gives emphasis in the hi mid range but keeping sg's tight low mid frequencies. The sound is not as bassy as it was with the 490t but its more clear and less dull. One friend of mine has the same sg model but with a sh-4 jb duncan on the bridge. The jeff beck has more power than the 498t as it has 2 Kohms at least more output contrasing with the 498t pickup but on the other hand the 498t has better clarity and retains the "rock" character of the sg instead of the more metal that sh-4 gives. In addition the seymour duncan through one of its technicians supports that jeff beck is great for alder body guitars(fender stratocaster) as it gives to the guitar fat mids and it doesn't become so trembly as it can be in mahogany body guitars. For sg they suggest the sh-5 custom which i think is a nice choice for it but it makes the sg to sound too metal. In my opinion if someone wants to play metal with a sg it has many many choices for the bridge (EMG 81-you can even play killswitch engage,sh-4,sh-5,) but for more punk/rock sound i would prefer an angus young pick up (or 498t) or a 57 plus classic which i think are huge solutions if you want this kind of sound.

thank you for you patience...!!

Interesting look with White pups, nice guitar that.

I have been contemplating putting a 57 in the neck and an Angus in the bridge of my faded. I like classic rock stuff and some blues etc would this combination be any good, anyone tried it. Thanks :)

I went for a Pearly gates on the bridge (FANTASTIC, AWESOME AND MUCH MUCH MORE) and a SD p90 (vintage model) in the neck...

that's really perfect for what i wanted, a ballsy bridge for classic rock/hard rock, and a more clean and warm neck...
