jpwalters
Attached are a few pictures of my Grandfather base guitar. After a little research online I believe its from 1965 model EB-2-C. The serial number is 521511. I don't really know much about guitars so anything anyone could tell me about this particular model would be great. Can anyone tell me how to confirm the year it was manufactured? I would also be interested to know the estimated value. I found 4 other similar guitars online that are either exactly like this one or really close and they ranged in prices form $1000 - $4500. This one has a much lower serial number than the others I found and is in nearly mint condition. As a side note I also have the original case though its in pretty poor condition on the outside. Thanks for your feed back and comments. -James

tvguit
Based on this PDF I found about Gibson serial numbers my guitar falls in the range of serial numbers from 1968 and not 1965. http://www.gibson.co...RIALNUMBERS.pdf Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately, the serial number is usually a bad way to date a Gibson guitar. Sometimes they even re used them! A better way is to look at the appointments and base them off of other years. I think the year 1968 is probably right or close enough to when this was made. What tipped me off is the "whitch hat" knobs that are from the late 60s. As for value, I think eBay is the best way to determine that. Check completed auctions and current auctions. Try to match up the time period and general condition. Are you looking to sell or just know what the value is? If you do want to sell, I would think your best bet would be to put it on eBay at $0.00 and see what happens. You could do a buy it now but I think the best way is to go no reserve starting at 0 (sounds risky, but it really isn't). If you aren't looking to sell then just play it and love it! Congrats! jpwalters
Hey thanks for the reply. That seems really odd about the serial numbers being re-used multiple times. I wonder what they were thinking? I'm really just trying to figure out what I have and not really interested in selling it. On ebay/other guitar sites it looks like the price ranges from a low of $1000 to a high of $4000. Given this ones condition I'm guessing to the right person it would be worth $2500 - $3500. All the ones I've seen online seem to have been listed for sale a while so it doesn't look like its a must have / gotta have item but it clearly still holds a good amount of value. Any thoughts about original cases and their value? They seem to sell for $200-$500 so clearly not as valuable as a the guitar. Mine like I said is in very poor condition at this point. Should I look into to getting it refurbished (if that's even possible) since I have it or would it be just as good to get rid of it and just store the guitar in new quality case? -James
tvguit
I would suggest a new, well fitting hard shell case. If you have room for the old case then I would suggest keeping it anyway. You can't really refurbish a case (unless it is for a '59 les paul or something but I have never seen it done). The old case would be nice to have around just for looks though. I am sure this is a fantastic bass but I think that valuation is a little high. The market right now is terrible! Also, Gibson isn't really known for their basses so they don't go for as much as they should. However it is still a great guitar and a awesome piece to enherit. Now you need to learn how to play bass!
Cam in alberta
A few months ago on another forum there was a 50's 5 latch lifton case in peices, looked like it had been run over by a truck. Sold for several hundred dollars. Someone can fix them, but has to be worth it.
