I have a chance to buy a 2007 gibson cf100e reissue MAPLE. It is in 9.9/10 condition. he says there were only 24 maple ones made. the price is $2900 US with free shipping. I want to know if you think it is worth that price and if you like the guitar/what you think about it. Do you think i'm better off spending the money on another, possibly better, gibson acoustic? I really love the look of the guitar and the fact its uncommon. There's not a big amount of info avail online about it. He is sending me the serial number tomorrow so i can check it out. Appreciate the feed back thanks.

Looks like a neat guitar with its own "vibe." I think the real question is what are you planning on doing with it? Do you intend to play it plugged or unplugged?

If you are planning on playing it plugged into an amp then I would say it could be a good buy (although the price seems fairly high).

If you are planning on playing it unplugged then I would not buy it before playing it. There is a reason that you don't see many (any?) maple topped acoustics around. It won't resonate well (like spruce).

If you are planning on playing it unplugged I would look somewhere else. It does look cool though!

That's what I was thinking too. Just love the look of it so much! What would you recommend for a great unplugged acoustic in the same price range? J-45 Std? Thanks for your reply.

What a tough question! Soooo many different ones. If you live close enough to a dealer then journey my friend! and play as many as you can. While you will not go wrong with a J-45 standard, there are so many more great Gibson acoustics. J-185, Southern Jumbo, L-00, so many!

What about this guitar did you like the most? That way we can try to narrow down the criteria and point you in they right direction. If it was the maple then I would suggest looking into the J-200 or the J-185. If it was the body style then a spruce topped J-160 or J-160e (the e is designating the pickup and electronics).

I think the J-185 was one of the coolest Gibsons to come off the line. Check it out!

I just need a cutaway and something i can plug into an amp that sounds decent but also has amazing unplugged sound. i liked that it was different, cutaway, the inlays. i like this one to: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Gibson-J-185-EC-ltd-edition-see-thru-BLUE-OHSC-/330503219707?pt=Guitar&hash=item4cf386e9fb#ht_815wt_905

thoughts on the one in the link?

If you're not dead set on getting a Maple guitar, look into a Song Writer Deluxe... You can get them with a cut away, they have electronics and they have a huge sound unplugged. The CF 100 is a great looking guitar but is not known for having a big sound. I would imagine a Maple version would be even less so. I bought a hog re-issue without playing it and was quite disappointed in the sound. An expensive lesson.

im thinking it's either going to be this type: http://cgi.ebay.ca/2008-Gibson-Acoustic-Electric-Songwriter-Deluxe-/230582227679?pt=Guitar&hash=item35afc592df#ht_18282wt_1139 OR this type: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Gibson-J-185-EC-ltd-edition-see-thru-BLUE-OHSC-/330503219707?pt=Guitar&hash=item4cf386e9fb#ht_815wt_905

OPINIONS AND ADVICE ON THESE PEOPLE? I LIKE THE BLUE ONE A LITTLE MORE BUT I THINK THE SONGWRITER DELUXE WOULD BE AWESOME AS WELL.

  • 1 year later...

I believe the CF-100 line to be undervalued still!

If I was in your shoes I would snap this one up in a heartbeat.

Take a look at the Japanese trade site digimart

Search there for CF-100 and you will see some appreciated guitars vintage and reissue.

Good luck and if you don't buy her, send the seller my way!

Regards, Mark

The first $3K I bought was a Cf 100E RI. Standard spruce/hog combo. Gorgeous guitar that, to my ears, sounded thin and weak. I tried tuning down a step, heavy strings, EQ tricks when plugged, etc. I could never get the tone I wanted out of it. I can't even imagine how a maple version might sound. Even weaker? Anyway, looked great but it had to go. If you want an acoustic you can play unplugged and have it sound substantial, follow the advice about the Song Writer Deluxe with the cut away. I would not recommend buying the CF 100 with out playing it first no matter how cool it looks.
