rik66
Hi, I have played both the Standard and the Special, they were pretty comparable... I am on a limited budget, so I am thinking of going with the Special. should I save a hundred dollars more and go for the Standard? Will the Standard hold it's value better than the Special? Does anybody else have an SG Special... if so what do you think after owning it for a while? Thanks
strat-o-steve
The SG Standard will always be slightly more valuable than the Special, just because of the extra cosmetics and that it costs more new. If you just need $100 more, save save save! You won't regret it!
Tim Plains
They're both great guitars. If you can live without the inlays and pickup covers, get the Special.
rik66
Thanks for the responses so far... I'm gonna try to save a little more... but, I think I'm going to end up getting the special....
DJScott
The Special is a great guitar, but the Standard is much nicer. Treat yourself, get the Standard!
Bender 4 Life
does the Special have a bound fretboard? (I honestly forget) if the diff. is only $100 then definitely go for the Standard...it'll come w/a HSC. my wife bought me a post flood (7-19-10 date) SG Standard.....it's flawless, and I wouldn't trade it for anything ! even with the "pcb board" electronics it has a bada$$ tone that none of my 4 LP's have.....neither does my Flying V. the SG Std can be used for ANY genre (i'm sure the Special could as well) and has a tone all to its self. Guest BentonC
Are you only concerned with function? If so, the Special is definitely the way to go. If you think you might like to have more cosmetic features, and a case, go for the Standard. You'll kick yourself in a few years if you really wanted the Standard, but wanted to pinch a few pennies and got the Special though...
Alfa Sprint
The SG Special is a gret guitar and price is attractive But the SG Standard is a must. Inlays (crown and Gibson) on the hradstock, very nice cream binding on the neck, trapezoid position-marker inlays, 498T bridge pickup and TKL/Gibson flight case. tartanbeastie
I have a faded special and my main reason for this over other sg's is because it is plain to look at in comparrison. I love the very simple look without the added bling. I love the sound of it and wont swap the pick ups like a lot of folk do. Great guitar at an exceptionally good price. rik66
thanks... I think i'll just wait. the case that comes w/ the standard is a strong argument....
DB Cooper
I had to make this same choice a short while ago. Ultimately I went with the Standard, and I am so glad I did. The Special Faded looked great to me, but the SG Standard is just a thing of beauty. Every time I open the case (and the hard case is a must) I get a sense of excitement. This is truly a super guitar. It even SMELLS great! It's completely up to you, of course, but I doubt you will regret the extra $$ a few years down the road (or even right away!). ~DB
tartanbeastie
unless your gigging or transporting regularly dont let the case be a deciding factor. my guitar sits out on display on a guitar stand when not used. seriously though, for the money the special is a great guitar. The neck on it feels so good as well, makes you want to pick it up and play
