ryanfender
So I have been planning to buy a new Ameritage case for my LG-1 because the one I have doesn't fit that great and its top is not arched. Now I am also considering buying a second Ameritage for my 1990 J-200 simply because of some small things I don't like about the case and better protection. My issues with the original Gibson case are: (1) there is no second neck support towards the nut, thus the only neck support is up toward the heel of the neck leaving everything else unsupported. (2) the padding of this case was not designed to accommodate large endpins. When I got the guitar it had a old Baggs pickup in it so I took it out and installed a Colosi end pin plug. The endpin is pretty big and almost pokes into the wood of the case when the guitar is in there. Not good if I were to drop the guitar on its end. (3) the case has less arch in the top than others I have seen which makes it more difficult to use with my Oasis humidifier. Now, I don't travel with this guitar much with the expectation of putting it in cars and going to gatherings and friend's houses. It doesn't fly and it doesn't gig. Also, I can get Ameritage cases at "cost" so we aren't talking a ton of money here. Question: would it be bad Gibson etiquette to separate my guitar from its original case (I would likely sell the Gibson case, value????). I don't believe it would hurt the value of the guitar but my emotional side has a small problem with it. Does selling this case to buy an Ameritage sound like the responsible thing to do? Notice the single neck support in the pictures. Every other Gibson case from this era I have seen has the dual supports.

I think you answered your own question. If you are not flying just travelling by car, why the need for more case protection? Oh and,...Yes, selling the case will affect re-sale, but not by a lot. J-1854Me
Thanks Spot Some buyers may devalue recently-built guitars that don't have the original case. With older guitars, having the original case is a 'deal sweetener', for sure. Some of those vintage cases can command stupid money! With a newer guitar, where selection may be a lot greater, the expectation is that the original case is there. If I were you, I would hang onto that original early 90s HSC -- they only used those from 1989 to 1993. But hey! -- that's just me!
eds111
You can have a 2nd neck support made. I did that once. If you know who made the case call them and ask. I gave them the dimensions. I think they charged $10. TKL was the company I believe. Also you can make one fairly easily. It is just some rigid insulation covered in felt. Getting felt that matches may be difficult. dhanners623
Not to be snide, but it'd be worth it to get a new case just so you wouldn't have to look at that ugly interior anymore. That color isn't natural.... Seriously, though, I doubt anyone ever regrets upgrading their case, even if the guitar just spends its time sitting inside. Were I you, I'd get the best case I could afford.
