PepsiMoon
Hi Everyone, I went to guitar center and bought the last Epiphone Goldtop 56'Reisue with the P90 Pups. I must say that Im amazed with the playability of this guitar..It's pretty danged sweet!! However I HATE The P90 Pickups..On the rythym pickup side it sounds sweet as all get out..but on the lead side it sounds like absolute crap..I have two stock pickups from an old epiphone SG that is long gone..Im wondering (before I take off the strings and such) if the stock humbuckers will even fit on this axe? (Meaning, are the "Holes" routed out enough to fit the humbuckers?) Thanks in advance.... PepsiMoon (PepsiMoon on Secondlife as well..:)
brianh
Uh no - not even close. You will need to either get a better soap bar style P90 or route the cavity for a humbucker. But are you sure it's not someting else? What kinda amp you got?
tweed2
Why don't you change out the bridge pickup to a better P90. lots of great ones out there. Lollar, Vintage Vibe, even the Heywoods are getting good reviews.
midiman56
Unless you just don't care for the sound of P90's ... which are not everyone's cup-of-tea. That would leave the question as to why you bought that particular guitar? Not trying to be a jerk, Pepsi ... honest! This is a great guitar (I own one too) and I think that P90 pickups are one area where Epiphone EXCELS. I agree with Brian that there might be some other reason for your disappointment with the bridge pup in this guitar. Jim
Fringe Lunatic
AFAIK, mini humbuckers are relatively easy to adapt to your P90-loaded LP.
amx05462
before i did any of that id think about changing capacitors first.
bigneil
I'm in Mini humbucker camp. sure, it wouldn't hurt to change some of the electrical components for high quality ones but a mini humbucker at the bridge would make a big difference to your sound. I think the routs are the same size so it's an easy mod to do. you should try out some different guitars at the shop with different kinds of pickups and see which ones you like the best, or try youtube for reviews. Whitmore Willy
Pepsimoon, Welcome to the forum! Well, you got the answer to your original question. Being a new member, we know very little about you or your setup. Even so, you have gotten some very good responses from some very knowledgeable members. As previously asked, what type of amp? Have you changed strings yet? Have you tried adjusting the pickup height on the bridge pickup? They usually sit on high density foam pads akin to weather stripping. At least they do on my P90 Special. The amount of adjustment is somewhat limited.(don't want to crack the covers) You can do small minimal adjustments without changing anything. If the pickup is too close it can kill the sustain. Too far from the strings and it may sound weak. (just don't run the screws through the back of the guitar).LOL You can however, add to or subtract from the rubber for more extreme adjustments. Also, some people like to find the optimum height, mark the covers, then replace the foam rubber with wood shims. As mentioned, there are many good replacement pickups. Do you play with your tone and volume on ten or do you use them for mixing and blending? If you keep them at ten then any electronic replacement will have minimal effect. If not then, once again as mentioned, better tone caps might make some difference. Also, in the realm of controls. (If you do a lot of volume and tone adjustment) The guitar is wired modern dependent. If you roll off the volume on a pickup it will start to darken the tone. Once again...Welcome to the nut house! BillyGibson
I had a '56 too. I loved the look and I loved the sound of the P90's Unfortunately, my wife didn't care for the sound. Neither did the friends I would play with. Wound up trading it off for an LP with 57's. And then added a Casino that everyone likes. P90's aren't for everyone. So a pick up swap might be in order. Or if you're within the return period, take it back and get something else.
jcwillow777
I have a '56 GT and I almost sold it a few years ago. I have tried to like P90s, but they are just too noisy for me. I use a lot of pedals, which P90s don't like. Especially overdrives, which I love. I put a set of Gibson minis in mine. Let me just say that I don't plan on selling it any time soon. tweed2
So are you saying you like the neck pickup, but not the bridge pickup? If so, what is it about the bridge pickup you don't like? Would you want to change both or just the bridge?
