New L-1 Robert Johnson

BlondBlake

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

After Trying one at the local store, I ordered one. It will arrive in 2 weeks. So I am counting the days.

But I have some questions in advance.

The guitar will be factory-equiped with 012-053 gauged strings (SAG-MB12) but can it handle 013-056 gauged strings without any harm?

In order of guitar-care i'm asking myself wich product I have to use to take care of the nitrocellulose finish and the Ebony fretboard.

I'm allready using GHS FastFret for stringcare.

I've read that lemon-oil-based fretboardcare would be nefast for the fingerboard.

Are there any products I should avoid in combination with the nitrocellulose finish?

I have a shubb capo but will the rubber interact with the finish on the neck?

A leather guitar strap will this affect the finish.

Hope you guys will be able to help me out.

Thank in advance

Welcome / .013 - .056 are fine. I have found as long as you don't leave the capo on your Guitar it will be ok. If you leave a capo with rubber it will do your guitar harm. / A real leather strap is Ok too. But straps that are not real leather such as plastic or colors, the plastic will leave the inprint of the fake plastic strap on your guitar. That will happen real easy in the case on a hot day. Check out: FRETS.COM It has alot of information about Guitar Care. Enjoy that New Gibson [thumbup] and Welcome again to the Forum. A Great Bunch of People here to Help. Its a Joy to read up on the Gibson's we All Love to Play [biggrin]

If you leave leave the capo on for days or weeks it may affect it. But put it on and off for songs all you like. I used to hang my Martin on a wall hanger 24/7 after a while I noticed some discoloration where the hanger touched the neck. For awhile I put a polishing cloth on the hanger first. Now I usually store them in the case; best for humidity and general protection.

Enjoy that new guitar; I've always like those. I bet the light gage strings will sound better on that small box...let us know. And of course pictures are always appreciated!

i HAVE seen leather straps leave marks. beware. for the fretboard, use pure, raw linseed oil, or bore oil (made for clarinets, not the stuff for guns).

i must ask though......... if you played one at the shop and loved it, then why did you order one? why didn't you buy the one that you played and loved?

Congradulations on your new purchase....I really like these guitars. I think they come with 12's, but 13's should be fine. You can also tune down the 13's 1/2 step, still get plenty of volume and will probably sound great on your guitar. I've recently changed the strings on one of my guitars to 11's or "special lights" and have really enjoyed the ease of play and lack of finger pain, and ability to bend for the blues songs.....as with any new guitar, try a few different companies and string guages and tension till you find what you AND THE GUITAR like.....it is so subjective that only YOU will know. You might want to get a friend to play your guitar towards you so you can see how it projects with different combinations....or Video yourself playing.....good luck!!

The only reason I don't comment on threads like this is because I find myself then goggling the guitar in question; finding more out about it's materials etc, looking up clips on youtube etc -and then before I know it, I can't get it out my head and have started yearning for it!!

Congratulations though!! and yes ;I have looked up sound clips of this baby (and prices) and it is a guitar that my hearts skips a beat over - NICE!!msp_thumbup.gifmsp_thumbup.gif

After 3 days of playing her funkyness I can say I'm in love with this little devil.

A couple of things bother me though.

The cheap plastic bridge pins. I'm thinking about replacing them with ebony ones.

Anybody knows the size i've got to get after?

The tuning machines offer a lot of precision but I can't fasten them with a screwdriver after I've changed strings. Pulling them a little tighter ads more stability.

I'm thinking about replacing them with either Grover Sta-Tite Nickel Keysor with Gotoh SE700-05MN/B.

Both are open back tuning machines in the same price range.

Any suggestions?

Pictures will folow ...

Nice grouping! Love the colors! Especially the Tele and the orange chair. Right up my alley, being Retrorod, ya know [thumbup] The Robert Johnson looks sweet with the pyramid bridge and all....congrats!

By the way, you should call yourself BlindBlake instaead of Blondeblake. Better 'blues' name... [cool]
