Vintage Grabber and Ripper

Did the 70's issues of Grabber and Rippers come in any other finish or color than natural?

Did the sliding pick up on the Grabber work or offer any change in tone or was it just a flash in the pan idea that did not amount to much? You do not see it offered on any other bass.

I believe the Grabber and Ripper also came in black, similar scheme to the L6-S guitars of the same period. I knew a bass player that bought a new Ripper (natural finish) in the seventies and it was definitely an improvement over the other Gibson basses at the time. He liked it very well.

A recent former bass player in my band pulled out his old Grabber now and then. When they came out, and my recent reintroduction to them, I never thought the sliding pickup really moved enough to make any perceivable difference.

But then, this is a guitar players opinion.

I bought my Gibson Grabber new in late 74 or early 75 (sold it in 78 when I joined the US Air Force). The sliding pickup did work (on mine anyway). Some people complained because it would get stuck. I used to use my thumb to change pup position while I was playing. Deeper tone toward the neck and brighter tone towards the bridge. I usually kept toward the middle.

Edit: What happened to this forum? I've been away for a while and all the previous posts are gone. I had to re-register to get onto the forum. Can any of the old posts be accessed? Are they archived somewhere?

Thanks!
