1Zepaholic
I am relatively new to playing guitar. I always wanted to play & have been a fan of Les Pauls. I presently have a 2007 Gibson Les Paul with a 50's neck & 2010 50's studio tribute. Yesterday, went into a local GC, they had a 2006 Gibson Les Paul classic with a 60's neck. I played it & found the neck to be more comfortable to play...it seemed a hair wider (might be my imagination IDK). Am I imagining things? Is there that much of a difference in the necks? I would appreciate y'all thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.
fedwayjohn
Good questions. And if anyone can comment on how the '60's neck and the new asymmetrical neck compare, I would like to hear the comments.
vincentw
The nut widths for the 50s, 60s, and asymmetrical necks are the same. The 60s slim taper neck is going to feel thinner than the asymmetrical profile. The asymmetrical is a rounded profile with more mass taken off the treble shoulder for a more comfortable feel for your fretting hand. The 60s neck has what most people would call a flatter/thinner backside.

Riffster
All things equal a thinner neck will feel wider because the way your hand rests on the neck. A rounder neck has more contact with your hand not so on a thinner neck, your hand perceives the edges more and seems wider.
