Jericho-79
Hey everyone. I have a really quick question regarding the Gibson logo typically found on the SG headstock. What do you call that flower-like symbol just below the Gibson logo? So far, I can't find a Gibson owner who knows for sure. Can anyone shed some light? L5Larry
That is commonly known as the "crown" inlay.
colin4195
Yeah, I always call it a crown.
Lungimsam
On Gibson's site, they describe it for the '61 RI guitar under the specs link as: Mother of Pearl "Gibson" Logo with Crown Logo On the SG Bass (with the same inlay design) they call it, on the spec page: Mother of Pearl "Gibson" Logo + Holly So I guess that means you could call it crown or Holly. VinceS
Anyone else out there think it kinda looks like a fox? Yeah, I know, I'm crazy.
colin4195
I see whatcha mean, but it would look more like it if the bottom ones were wider.

ironlung40
I've always called it the "holly" inlay. I've always heard it referred to as this, and I've been around some Gibson employees, too. I see the fox, but it's a stretch.
BigKahune
I thought the word "holly" referred to dyed black veneer of wood from the holly tree that was used as an overlay on the headstock. Gibson USA uses synthetics these days. The inlay design/shape is called a crown or split wheat.

I believe you're right. Here are the specs from the Gibby website. It is called the crown logo on there. BTW, Custom Shop still uses holly - if you check some listings for Custom Shop Gibbies, I'm sure you'll see some of those include the words - "headstock holly veneer" In the text - http://www.long-mcquade.com/products/7182/Guitars/Electric/Gibson/60_Les_Paul_Special_Double_Cutaway_-_TV_Yellow.htm Above the pic - http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBLP59 In the specs - https://www.rainbowguitars.com/guitar/gibson-custom-shop/1959-les-paul-reissue-vintage-red-vos/HB236C/GB

Because I do own a custom shop. I probably saw that in the specs or heard it when I was buying. Anyway, it is what it is, an inlay on the headstock. I like it though. It looks classy to me.
