Volume difference

Hello All,

I'm new to the Gibson world and just got hooked when I got my first Les Paul Studio faded a few months ago. Today I just received my next purchase which is the les Paul Traditional pro which is considerably heavier. My question is this, my studio has these in your face pickups that sounds loud, when I plugged in my traditional pro with same settings on volume and tone on guitar, they seem softer. I actually also tried it plugged in my line 6 pod with headphones as well, the studio sounded much more open and just pops out compared to the traditional pro. Anyone has ideas on this? Thanks

how do the 2 guitars sound acousticaly compared to each other? generally, a heavy guitar will sound darker than a lighter one, but they are other factors.

pickups are actaully better than most give credit for at picking up the overtones that a guitar has acoustically. the better a guitar sounds acoustically, the better it will sound plugged in.

if you don't like the way it sounds acoustically, there are ways to dial it in.

Thanks for the responses, my studio worn has burstbuckers Pro, does that make a difference ? Acoustically, the studio is louder as it is chambered, however the traditional pro is pretty resonant as well. Plugged in, the trad has a nice sustain, just the volume seem softer, seems like I have to turn the volume all the way to 10 for it to come out.

Also, on the tone control, the tone control for bridge is raised higher than the tine control for neck, is that normal as well ?

There is your problem!

You have the coil tap/split active. Meaning you are only using half of the pickup, which equates to less output. Just push that control knob down against the body, and it will put you back into humbucker mode. If you want more info on coiltap just do a search, I have seen many discussions on the topic.

(Also note this coil tap is a special feature on the Trad Pro, its not on your faded studio pushing and pulling on the studios knobs will do nothing.)

But the coil tap is on the volume control. the tone control that is raised cannot be pushed down at all. Can any trad pro owners verify that both tone controls are not coil tapped and are not raised?

I have attached 2 shots here, one with the coil tap pulled out and one when the coil taps are pushed down. The second from the right is the bridge tone control

here's the one with coil taps on both volume controls pulled up

Note how the Bridge tone control is raised, I'm not able to pushed it down at all

Ok, I'm wrong on this one. I wish I had another answer. But that knob does look suspicious. It's possible that the knob is not seated down all the way on the post, and it has nothing to do with your problem. Or it could be the tone pot is damaged and is 100% of the problem. If you bought this in a store, I would take it there and have one of their tech guys look at it. Unfortunately I don't own a Trad pro, so I am not sure that this isn't a normal output for those pickups.

Thank you for your help ! I don't think the knob is related to my volume issue, it was just a passing mention. I just A/B the trad and studio, set both volumes and tone controls to same settings, the volume difference is like night and day.. I wonder if it's a wiring issue or it's the inherent behavior of the trad pro due to coil taps. I've had PRS McCarty with coil tapping and did not experience the same issue though.
